Plainville, Connecticut Man Arrested for DUI in Construction Zone; Failure to Slow Down/Move Over on I-84 in Farmington, Connecticut.

On Wednesday, 07/23/25, at approximately 12:55 am, a Trooper assigned to Troop H- Hartford was clearing a traffic stop along the right shoulder of I-84 westbound near exit 37 in Farmington. It was at this time that the Trooper observed a Volkswagen sedan pass them in the right lane of three and had failed to slow down and move over. While the previously stopped motorist had left, the Trooper still had their emergency lights activated at that time. Following this observation, the Trooper deactivated their emergency lights and attempted to catch up with the observed Volkswagen sedan.

Upon approaching an active construction zone in the area of exit 36, the Trooper observed the operator failing to maintain their lane. It was at this time that the Trooper activated their emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop, and the operator reduced speed but failed to stop. The operator continued to travel through the active construction zone, which had both the right and center lanes closed. Once through the construction pattern, the operator merged onto Route 72 west in Plainville and took exit 4, ultimately coming to a stop past a four-way intersection.

Once safely stopped, the Trooper made contact with the operator and identified the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from within the vehicle. The Trooper observed that the operator was exhibiting clear signs of impairment, to include red glossy eyes. The operator was positively identified as Benjamin Sweezey (DOB 03/02/2002), of Plainville. Upon asking Sweezey why he failed to stop on the highway when signaled to do so, Sweezey explained that he did not want to stop on the highway due to speeding vehicles.

Based upon these observations, Sweezey was requested to submit to Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. Sweezey agreed to submit to testing and subsequently failed to perform the tests to standard. Sweezey was arrested and transported to Troop H, where he was processed on the following charges:

CGS 14-223(a); Disobeying the Signal of an Officer
CGS 14-227a(2nd)Z; Illegal Operation of a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs in Construction Zone (2nd Offense)
CGS 14-236Z; Failure to Maintain Proper Lane in Construction Zone
CGS 14-283b(b(1; Failure to Slow Down/Move Over for Emergency Vehicle

Chemical testing later conducted at Troop H revealed that Sweezey had a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit.

Sweezey was later released from custody on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court on 08/08/25. Please see the attached criminal information summary at the link below.
