Jessica and I moved to Norwood in 2018. In contrast to the overwhelming, noisy “out there” of national politics, we’ve been energized by the little things we can do *right here* to get involved and better our community.

As the votes were counted last night, my takeaway was that many of you feel the same way. You want to lean into the things we can control in these three square miles of Norwood.

And can we talk about You for a minute? Based on Ward 2’s recent history in non-mayoral elections, I was expecting about 770 people would vote.

Oh no, You beat that number by nearly 200 votes! 💪

966 Ward 2 neighbors cast a ballot this cycle — the most since 2009 for this type of election.

I take that to mean that You too believe that this can be the best place in the Tri State for families… and that You want to see:

More investment in Burwood Park.

More walkable storefronts on Williams Ave.

More collaboration between City Council, Administration, and the School District.

More solutions for improving our streets and keeping our neighborhood safe.

More partnerships that allow our limited resources to go further.

More ways for neighbors to get involved in co-creating our bright future.

The great neighborhood activist, Jane Jacobs, one said, “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created BY everybody.”

In other words, cities work best when You show up like You did for this election.

I’m prepared, honored, and excited to be your representative for the next two years! We’ve got such an exciting future ahead of us. Thank you, thank you, thank You for believing in me and this vision to Move Norwood Forward!

Where did all the kids go?

Since the year 2000, Norwood's population of school-aged kids is down 41% from 3,810 in the year 2000 to 2,266 in 2023.

Sure, the city's overall population loss of 12% accounts for some of that, but Norwood has disproportionately lost young families.

Could it be a broader demographic trend?

Nationwide, the school-aged population is down just 0.1% compared to 2000. Looking closer to home, Hamilton County's school-aged population has decreased is 17%. Again, Norwood is down 41%.

Could it be that other local communities have adopted more family-friendly policies and practices than Norwood?

While I don't have specific answers about this shift, I do think it's important for our city's leaders to be curious and data-driven when charting our future.

I recently spent hours on the Census website researching Norwood's historical markers. The following charts show some interesting trends I came across, including age, housing, educational attainment, and more.

What stands out to you?

Candidly, I haven’t always agreed with neighbors about their ideas or vision for the Victory Park area.

That said, yesterday was easily the best, most fun day I’ve ever had there… and a good reminder to keep an open mind about things.

Looking forward to many more days like this in the future througout Norwood!

Thanks to those that organized the Dog Mayor contest 🐕 and the 2nd Annual Norwood Comedy Fest… they were both hilarious 😂

I’ve been lucky to walk in some of America’s most famous parades, but none of them compare to this year’s Norwood Day Parade. Thanks to the friends and family who walked in support of my candidacy… and those neighbors who waved as we passed by. What a fun night!

It’s not every day that ground is broken on a generational infrastructure project, but that’s exactly what happened in Norwood today.

Local residents, news outlets, City officials, and a County Commissioner gathered to commemorate the start of the Elm Ave Flood Elimination Project, which has literally been decades in the making.

After years of seeing horrific imagery of flooding in Ward 1, I was inspired to hear neighbors talk about how this project will change their lives for the better. It was a powerful reminder of what government, at its best, can do for people.

My thanks and admiration go out to the County, which allocated $2.3M to the project, as well as the residents and city officials - past and present - who worked so hard to make this happen.

To be sure, all of this work predates my appointment to Council, but, nonetheless, this was a special occasion to be a part of.

What’s the most exciting thing happening in Ward 2 right now? Near the top of my list would be the revitalization we’re seeing on Williams Ave.

Long ago known as Locust Ave, this corridor can be found on historical maps dating back to at least 1869 (and possibly earlier). Once serving as a sort of “neighborhood main street” for the hundreds of houses within walking distance, I’ve heard that both Kroger and Busken Bakery once had shops in the buildings pictured below.

As I see it, what makes its revitalization significant is this…

Most people don’t walk more than a quarter mile to accomplish an errand. If they have to walk further than that, they get in their car and drive. And when people get in their car, they are liable to leave Norwood to patronize businesses in other communities. In small bursts, this is harmless, but a steady pattern of leaving Norwood is a drain on our local businesses and reduces routine encounters with neighbors.

For instance, a decade ago, anyone living south or east of the Williams/Floral traffic light had essentially no useful walks within a quarter mile radius (except possibly their church). But now, these three buildings represent an opportunity to create more walkable amenities, more conversations with neighbors, and more reasons to live life in Norwood.

My eternal thanks goes out to the people who played a role in creating the Corner Store Provision, which gives these buildings flexibility of use. It’s this type of asset-based thinking – playing to Norwood’s inherent strengths – that will be key to our city reaching its full potential in the future.

Good times yesterday cleaning up around Victory Park and the Middle/Montessori School. I had fun hearing the kiddos ask questions about where litter comes from and watching them try to use the trash pickers. Not to mention the way something like this makes me want to research the existing ordinances related to trash, smoking, and parks. Thanks to everyone who organized these cleanups and came out to help!
