Capturing History: Ice Harvesting on Rockland Lake

Rockland Lake was once known as the “Icehouse of New York City” throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, workers braved the winter cold to harvest massive ice blocks from the lake, supplying homes, restaurants, and even breweries in NYC before refrigeration existed.

Using horse-drawn plows and saws, they cut the ice into precise blocks, storing them in insulated icehouses before shipping them down the Hudson River. At its peak, Rockland Lake produced some of the purest ice, renowned for its clarity and slow melt rate.

What an incredible opportunity of capturing this moment of yesteryear.

The Bear Mountain Bridge is celebrating its anniversary this year.

As the oldest of NYSBA’s bridges, Bear Mountain Bridge was the first vehicular river crossing between New York City and Albany.

At the time it was built, it was also the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first suspended bridge to have a concrete deck.

The project of building the Bear Mountain Bridge marked the beginning of a golden age of long span bridge building along the Hudson River and throughout the New York metropolitan area.

The success of the inventive methods used broke new ground and paved the way for the building of other suspension bridges, such as the George Washington and the Golden Gate.

The popularity of nearby Bear Mountain State Park, which opened in the 1910s, led to the need for a span across the river to replace the ferryboats which could no longer accommodate the crowds and their automobiles.
