July 8, 2001:
Forecast: 20% rain.
What happened: ~8 inches fell within hours, and the New rose 13 feet during an active rafting trip.

“Why not walk out?”
In a flash flood, the Gorge seals itself off—tributaries become fast, dangerous streams. The safest option was to continue downstream with trained guides.

They launched at ~1 foot and took off near 14 feet. No one expected this storm, and the guides did exactly what they were trained to do: get everyone out safely.

That raft sent it into the Meat Grinder in Lower Keeney Rapid at 6”, and the outcome was… predictable. 😂
