Meet the creator behind our new record Turn-A-Round 🎼✨
Before the DJ we now know as D Wynn, there was Darrell Wynn—a high school student at St. Martin Deporres discovering Detroit’s party scene in 1982. At a YWCA event downtown, watching Darryl Shannon and Delano Smith go back-to-back, he had a moment that changed everything. Introduced simply as “D” by Hassan Nurullah, a nickname that stuck for decades, it was that night he decided to become a DJ. Encouraged by peers like Derrick May, his early journey took shape through sessions at Mike Grant’s house alongside Mike Clark, Ray Barry, and Mike Jimenez. After early hesitations—hearing “you ain’t ready”—his first gigs came with Grant at Marygrove College and later a paid set for promoter Zana at Times Square. Not long after, in a conversation with May and Hertis Cummings, the name D Wynn was born.
As Detroit’s electronic music scene evolved, D Wynn became one of its foundational figures. A creative force behind the legendary Music Institute, he helped define an era where Friday nights with D Wynn and Derrick May, and Saturdays with Alton Miller and Chez Damier, became the heartbeat of the city. His influence extended beyond DJing into mentoring DJs, producers, and promoters. His work included collaborations with Derrick May under the R-Tyme moniker, producing classics like “Use Me,” “Love and Music,” and “Illusion/R-Theme” on Transmat. He toured with Inner City, played landmark shows including Pine K**b with New Order, and held an international residency at Club Florida 135 in Spain.
After years of success, industry changes and personal challenges led to a seven-year hiatus. His return was sparked by encouragement from peers who helped him adapt to new technology and reclaim his place behind the decks. He pushed through doubts about changing times and reestablished himself with powerful sets across Detroit. Today, D Wynn remains both legendary and deeply respected, a DJ whose passion is rooted in connection, creativity, and the joy of moving a crowd, with plans to release new music and collaborate with artists he’s long admired.
