Northwest Observer Covering northwest Guilford County’s local matters since 1996. Independently owned and operated by

We made our debut in November 1996 as the Oak Ridge Observer, a once-a-month newsletter for the community of Oak Ridge. As our coverage and readership expanded into Summerfield, then Stokesdale and northwest Greensboro, we evolved into the Northwest Observer and have since been providing “totally local” hometown news - in print and online - for residents of northwest Guilford County. Folks, it's been just over six months since we retired the Northwest Observer, but we've still got a foot in the door of northwest Guilford-area happenings, so if you haven't already followed us over to Connect2NWGuilford, please take a minute to do that now. Today on Connect 2's page we've shared the news that Town of Stokesdale, North Carolina's Santa Claus passed away earlier this week (along with a link to his obituary), passed along a post about the Town of Oak Ridge, NC's Music in the Park tomorrow evening (6 to 9 pm), and updated you on the latest candidate filings for open seats in Town of Stokesdale, North Carolina, Town of Summerfield, NC and Town of Oak Ridge, NC. Commission to hear Couch’s annexation/rezoning request tomorrow, Feb. 17, at 5:30 p.m.

This will be developer David Couch’s first step in annexing property previously located in Summerfield into the City of Greensboro

GREENSBORO – The Greensboro Planning and Zoning Commission will hear a request from Developer David Couch at its meeting tomorrow (Feb. 17) to annex and rezone 78.7 acres at 5136 Carlson Dairy Road and 4305 and 4307 Hamburg Mill Road. The property, now in unincorporated Guilford County, was in the Town of Summerfield before it was de-annexed last June along with 900 other acres Couch owned within the Summerfield town limits.

Tomorrow’s Commission meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and be held in the Katie Dorsett Council Chamber, 300 West Washington Street in Greensboro.

Anyone wishing to address the Planning and Zoning Commission and provide evidence/testimony during the meeting VIA ZOOM must email Planning staff no later than noon tomorrow: Luke Carter ([email protected]); Carla Harrison ([email protected]); Andrew Nelson ([email protected]); Mike Kirkman ([email protected]).

If approved by the city, the project’s map in the unified development plan “locks in place certain features including the common green space and the areas around the streams or near the lake to protect the (Greensboro) watershed,” designer Victor Dover told those who attended a meeting on Feb. 5. The plan has “pretty exacting standards…that we have to draw on the map and memorialize.”

Christopher Village will be the first of 11 mixed-use neighborhoods in The Villages of Summerfield Farms, to be developed on 978 acres annexed from Summerfield last June

Couch seeks approval for first project on de-annexed land

As proposed, Christopher Village on Carlson Dairy Road would serve as a model for the development of Couch’s property de-annexed from Summerfield last summer

by CHRIS BURRITT

NW GREENSBORO/GUILFORD COUNTY - Developer David Couch selected nearly 80 acres of pastures and woodlands near northwestern Greensboro’s watershed as the location for his first mixed-use project on nearly 1,000 acres de-annexed from the town of Summerfield.

Have a personal experience about Hurricane Helene to share? Our first issue of Connect2NWGuilford, which makes its debut next month, will include an article/survey of local residents who were personally affected by last September's Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina, and/or were motivated to contribute or are still contributing significant amounts of time and materials to assist with disaster recovery. If you or someone you know is willing to share your story with us, please email [email protected] with your contact info and I'll forward it to our longtime writer, Annette Joyce, who will be gathering input for this story

(AdobeStock video below: 4K aeriel drone video of damage in historic downtown Marshall, North Carolina, caused by Hurricane Helene last September. The hurricane that ravaged southeastern U.S. claimed over 200 lives and in North Carolina alone resulted in over $60 billion of damage.
