AI and automated systems impact every area and aspect of our lives, determining if we can secure quality housing, obtain affordable credit, gain a living wage job, access the right healthcare, and other services. While these technologies hold immense potential (lowering the cost of mortgage loans, increasing a homeowners’ chances of getting insurance, or identifying fraud and security threats) they also bring challenges. AI can perpetuate and amplify discrimination, resulting in denial of access to life-saving healthcare or false imprisonment.
This session will empower attendees with knowledge, actionable insights, and strategies to collaborate on practical solutions that can be implemented in our communities. innovative fairness methodologies and leverage AI to identify and eradicate discriminatory practices, while advocating for AI-driven equitable access to vital opportunities and striking a balance between fairness and accuracy in algorithmic models.
Panelist: Lisa Rice - President and CEO, National Fair Housing Alliance
As President and CEO, Lisa Rice directs the National Fair Housing Alliance’s (NFHA) mission to eliminate all forms of housing discrimination and ensure equitable housing opportunities for all people and communities. NFHA leads the fair housing movement and is the trade association for over 170 member organizations throughout the country.Ms. Rice is a published author contributing to several books and journals addressing a range of fair housing issues including - The Fight for Fair Housing: Causes, Consequences, and Future Implications of the 1968 Federal Fair Housing Act; Designed for the Future: 80 Practical Ideas for a Sustainable World; Discriminatory Effects of Credit Scoring on Communities of Color; and From Foreclosure to Fair Lending: Advocacy, Organizing, Occupancy, and the Pursuit of Equitable Credit.She is one of the nation’s leading experts on fair housing, lending, and Responsible AI policies having played major roles in crafting sections of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, establishing the Office of Fair Lending within the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and implementing other legislative and policy initiatives. She also helped lead the investigation and resolution of precedent-setting fair housing and lending cases securing remedies for millions of people as well as the elimination of systemic discriminatory practices. Ms. Rice serves on the Board of Directors of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Center for Responsible Lending, and FinRegLab as well as various Advisory Councils. She has received numerous awards including the National Housing Conference’s Housing Visionary Award and was selected as one of TIME Magazine’s 2024 ‘Closers.’
Panelist: Catherine Bracy, Founder and CEO, Tech Equity Collaborative
Catherine Bracy is a civic technologist and community organizer whose work focuses on the intersection of technology and political and economic inequality. She is the Founder and CEO of TechEquity Collaborative, an organization that mobilizes tech workers and companies to advocate for economic equity in our communities.She was previously Code for America’s Senior Director of Partnerships and Ecosystem where she grew Code for America’s Brigade program into a network of over 50,000 civic tech volunteers in 80+ cities across the US. She also founded Code for All, the global network of Code-for organizations with partners on six continents. Ms. Bracy built Code for America’s civic engagement focus area, creating a framework and best practices for local governments to increase public participation which has been adopted in cities across the US.During the 2012 election cycle she was Director of Obama for America’s Technology Field Office in San Francisco, the first of its kind in American political history. She was responsible for organizing technologists to volunteer their skills for the campaign’s technology and digital efforts. Prior to joining the Obama campaign, she was the administrative director at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society. She is on the board of directors at the Data & Society Research Institute and the Terner Housing Lab.
