We focus on LGBTQ+, Black, Native, POC, and disabled artists who create work that is sonically and politically pushing boundaries toward liberation. We work together to create an alternative to an industry that has historically exploited and devalued artist labor and requires artists to exhaust themselves to fulfill their life’s passion. We see the work of decolonial artists as world-building acti

vism that centers empathy and basic human needs. The crux of our work is centered in engaging the healing power of sound for communities in struggle. Our goal is to pay and provide material resources for artists whose work lies on the margins of mainstream consumption. Our work is multifaceted in that we take multiple avenues to address issues around accountability, accessibility, racism, transphobia, and other systems of oppression. Ratskin is curation centered in its practice and provides resources for artists to create self-determined spaces.

TYLER HOLMES — PATIENCE

Almost eighteen months later, *Patience* still feels like one of the more quietly strange records to come through Ratskin.

Five years in the making, Tyler Holmes’ *Patience* is an album about mortality, memory, consciousness, replication, nature, grief, and the uneasy distance between the things we experience and the things we can actually preserve.

The idea behind the record is **“Trapping The Ghost”** — trying to capture something fleeting inside a recording and give it a physical form.

You can hear that tension throughout the album, like on so many of Tyler Holmes works, they are nuanced , thick with meaning and memory, powerful architectural offerings for the mind and inner body. Acoustic instruments and fragile melodies sit alongside degraded electronics, fractured voices and sounds that seem to be slowly coming apart. It’s beautiful in places, unsettling in others, and rarely stays where you expect it to.

Inspired in part by Jeff VanderMeer’s *Southern Reach* trilogy and Mark Twain’s *No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger*, the record carries the feeling of discovering something familiar in an unfamiliar landscape.

*Patience* doesn’t really feel tied to a particular moment. It’s the kind of record that gets stranger with time.

Missing you everyday brother. The world is not the same with you in a different realm. There have been so many things I’ve went to text you about it’s hard to be I a constant state of “Dax would love this” or “I wonder what he would think about this”

Dax gave so much to the Ratskin vision and ethos. Ratskin would not continue to exist without Dax’s encouragement and support. Lots of times I was unsure of the future of the label or my own work and was feeling really depressed and stuck and Dax held space for me in a way that was totally beautiful and unique to our own relationship which branched artist collaboration and love in an intentional and humbling ways. we will continue to to do our best to honor Dax’s immovable and monumental legacy as an artist that would simply not accept no for an answer. We love you and miss you and we will never heal from the gap of love you have left in our hearts. I love you forever buddy.

David R Molina is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, sound artist/designer, studio/live sound engineer, music producer, and instrument inventor. He has created music and sound design for all the performing arts, film, and multimedia productions, nationally and internationally, for the past 24 years. Most of his collaborations address social justice issues. They have ranged from immigrant rights, racism, police brutality, the U.S. prison complex, environmentalism, homelessness, femicide, and survivors of war. Many include direct collaboration with marginalized and oppressed community members.

It’s been nearly two years since this beast of a record was released and in that time its importance and uniqueness has only impressed itself upon us in that time. this record holds space for a wide scope of human emotion and as I age every year, the emotional and evocative power of music and art cements itself further upon our ears both upon the first listen and somewhere around the hundredth listen, the joy this record brings does not diminish it only strengthens. Thank you to everyone who came out to Outsider Sounds and Visions Festival at First Church Of The Buzzard! It was a weekend to remember - it all happened so fast. If you have any pictures or video please send to us so we can add into our mega folder of documentation which we will slowly be sharing here.

We were able to donate $250 to the a very important organization doing very important work! Thank you to all who came out and supported all of the incredible artists.

We have our Spring sale running now through the end of April to celebrate our ongoing decades long shenanigans! New release announcements coming soon! Wow are we excited to drop the next two surprise releases! Big things en route!

Artist Spotlight: Tropisphere


Vocalist and synth player Eli Reyes carves out a story, etched in blood and flowers with a voice as sweet as it is evil and pulverizing. Jake Rodriguez lays down a bed of synth tones that can warp your mind from the inside out and moody rhythms that will get your head banging; leaving the last nail in the coffin for Bobby Cosmos to drive home with his super-phased bass lines, mechanical drums and cerebral synth melodies. Together, they bring an arsenal of industrial rhythms, street-wise noise and melodic texture to the fold — somewhere in the vein of synth pioneers such as Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream...at other times, echoing those many waves of aforementioned Frisko Freaks.
