We ended the year with a bang and we start with another one! 2020 is here and it feels like it’s going to be a powerful new year and a powerful decade. We are extremely excited about the fact that our presenter’s schedule lined up with ours.

We welcome Anima Shalhoub on our stage on this coming Friday. We first experienced her at Oakland´s CreativeMornings and decided we just have to introduce her to our community.

Naima is a Lebanese American vocalist, composer, performing artist and educator. She received her MA in Postcolonial and Cultural Anthropology and turned her focus to creation and performance in the Bay Area. She was a presenting speaker at TEDxLAU in Beirut, Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, BRIC Arts Media in Brooklyn and appeared at the National Conference on Community and Restorative Justice as well as the National Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation to name just a few. In addition to performing regularly, Naima is the Restorative Women and Girls Coordinator for Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth where she draws upon her prior experience as an RJ Coordinator for the Oakland Unified School District and her experience as a public school educator. A real power woman!

This event brings youth and elders from our community together to celebrate West Oakland’s deep and rich cultural heritage. Join us to listen to and share stories from this community, so that we can remember what was, discuss what is, and imagine what could be. You can choose to participate by sharing your own story, or just listen to others.

Last 3rd Friday in 2019 and we end it with at BANG!

As you all know we have a wonderfully diverse unique community in Oakland. This month is no exception.

Melissa Gray who is an actress, teacher of many theatrical disciplines and voiceover artist has been developing a form of storytelling at the Academy of Art for the past 12 years.
This Friday, she will present for the first time ever to non- actors a sliver of this very raw, autobiographical work that is her own unique way of training actors in "Method acting" fashion -- using their own lives as a template to dig deep and discover their vulnerabilities and strengths; enabling them to play roles onstage or film by using their own wounds and diverse emotional palettes.

No actual writing is ever done to create these monologue snapshots of the student's lives! Rather, the monologues are entirely uncensored and organic; developed from a multi-layered process of "emotional/sensory recall" (as it is known in the trade); interviewing; recording; writing on their feet and much editing!

She is bringing seven of her very brave acting students to present their short personal vignettes in a dynamic, emotionally- charged evening which is about acting, to be sure; but infinitely more about Life and sharing our pains and journeys.

AHC Founders, Kokomon and Aeeshah Clottey are the central subjects to IMAGINARY WALLS, A Documentary about Healing Racism. For over 30 years Kokomon and Aeeshah have hosted Racial Healing Circles in Oakland. The circles bring together a diverse group, with the specific intention of discussing their experiences and feelings about race. Aeeshah and Kokomon provide an environment that is safe, open-minded, and free from judgment. They stress that racism is a construct of an ill society; a mass delusion, and no one need feel guilt or shame about what they have felt or done in the past. The past is just that: past. It can be released, let go, and participants can heal.

Greetings from Sol Gate Studios...Anything big happen in life since we saw you last?
We had many, many exciting things happening over the summer while we were in Tuscany, Germany, Missouri and of course here in Oakland.
Rob and Martin will be sharing and can’t wait to hear about what happened in your world.

We've been already confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear. We need real leadership and inspiration more than ever these days. There is hope tho and let’s not forget we all have the duty to make this world work for us and the next generations.

We decided to end the summer with an incredible guest, neighbor and friend who literally is a powerhouse when it comes to community building and community outreach especially for the creative youth here in West-Oakland: Amana Harris.

Amana is the executive director of Attitudinal Healing Connection (AHC) who’s mission is to empower individuals to be self-aware and inspired through creativity art and education, making positive choices to break the cycle of violence for themselves and their communities. Amana will be joining us to talk about creative expression and communication for children, youth, adults and families. We will learn how AHC promotes the understanding that we can choose peace over conflict effectively.
