In Estonia, voting works a little differently. Casting your vote doesn’t involve checking a box or filling in a bubble next to a candidate’s name. Instead you just write down a number.
Every candidate in the race has a three-digit code. You go to your polling place, you grab a paper ballot, you take it into the booth, and you close the curtain behind you. Then, you look on that ballot for a small printed box, and you write your candidate’s three-digit number in that box. Voila, you’re done. It's simple, it’s low-tech, and it works.
So what’s the issue? Well, about a decade ago a new behavior started spreading across social media. Estonians began going into the booth, taking selfies with their ballot, and then posting those photos and videos to social media
