Through the initiative, we are investing in community-driven to unlock future funding and investments. By bridging the gap between community capacity and new infrastructure funding opportunities, we can ensure that capital investments are directed towards communities of color who are advancing neighborhood-scale climate solutions.

In our last post about Selfestem (for now!), we wanted to showcase the branding we developed in collaboration with Adamaka and team.

The new Self-eSTEM logo is inspired by an asterism, which in observational astronomy is an observed pattern or group of stars in the night sky. The logo represents our own asterism or connected network of STEM innovation, formed by a connect-the-dots constellation pattern in the shape of an “S”.

Featured in this post are various graphics and tangible items, from a sticker pack, a QR code enhanced t-shirt for fundraising, and a pamphlet that informs their audience about what Self-eSTEM is all about.

As we continue to wax poetic about our love for Selfestem, we wanted to highlight their fearless leader & founder: Adamaka Ajaelo.

Adamaka is an Oakland, CA native who fell in love with STEM as a child. As she progressed through her educational path, she realized how the further she went the more her support system crumbled - not seeing anyone that looked like her as fellow students or professors in most classes.

As Adamaka entered the workforce she had to overcome resistance and adversity in a silo - without a support system or faces that looked like hers in board rooms, similar to her educational experience. Adamaka took her experiences at top companies such as Visa, Facebook, Adobe, and utilized the learnings to build Self-eSTEM with the goal of creating a new experience and supportive community for BIPOC girls & women.

We’re kicking-off an ongoing series that celebrates our community of partners, collaborators, and team members who we absolutely adore and wouldn’t be here without. Our first series of posts are dedicated to our client , an organization that was developed by and for BIPOC women.

Self-eSTEM ignites pride, purpose, and possibility among BIPOC girls and women through STEM. They address systemic barriers in STEM for BIPOC women & girls through education, trainings, workshops, and providing access to a network of like minded women in the field who offer students insights and community that will last a lifetime.

On the second slide we highlight the Self-eSTEM summer camp. It’s a week-long camp that provides project-based activities focused on exploring new STEM concepts while developing their entrepreneurial, digital and technological skills. The goal is to spark STEM curiosity (often referred to as a “growth mindset”), and ignite critical thinking to address challenges within the student’s own communities and beyond.

Please follow to see what the new face and culture of STEM looks like and the impact they’re having in the Bay Area.

If you haven’t been able to tell from our last few posts, Nature heavily informs our design practice. We’re in awe of the world around us and it inspires how we move throughout this planet that we all share and inhabit. Our multidimensional design practice utilizes the framework of emergent strategy, the process for creating change that is open, agile, and inspired by the patterns and processes found in nature to achieve equilibrium.

With that in mind, we wanted to share a few pieces of nature based furniture that we recently fell in love with.

“Gathering Moss” is a book that we adore by author Robin Wall Kimmerer. We often reference both this text and “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants” in our viewpoints and how we establish many facets of our clients branding, communications, and so on as we attempt to connect with and be inspired by nature in all that we do.

This book reflects on the science of what moss is and the lessons we can learn from these organisms that we can apply to many aspects of our lives in how we interact with other beings and with our planet as a whole.

“Just as you can pick out the voice of a loved one in the tumult of a noisy room, or spot your child's smile in a sea of faces, intimate connection allows recognition in an all-too-often anonymous world. This sense of connection arises from a special kind of discrimination, a search image that comes from a long time spent looking and listening. Intimacy gives us a different way of seeing, when visual acuity is not enough.”
― Robin Wall Kimmerer, Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses

The latest in our Multi-Dimensional Design series is yet another entry from our favorite Strategist and Facilitator Preeta Banerjee. This post is titled Beyond Resistance: Building, Making, and Creating Sanctuary”, which is on the importance of sanctuary - the development of safe spaces to foster sacred bonds, thoughts, work, and community.

Read it here: https://bit.ly/3Ehl5zF

“This cultural soul orientation leads into acknowledgement of the facets of the phenomenological and ontological connection of the sacred and sanctuary. In addition to providing a haven for social, cultural and interpersonal connection, the experience of sanctuary equips the subject as a political being for discursive deliberation.”

Earlier this year one of our team members in Mexico City (Rey Robles) experienced a phenomenal exhibition at Museo Franz Mayer titled “Diseño En Femenino: México 1940-2022”. In an industry dominated by men this show focused on four decades of design from weaving, embroidery, textiles, graphic design and so much more to demonstrate the broad intellectual spectrum of women in design.

Works featured are by Rocío Mireles Gavito, Ximena Pérez Grobet, Anne-Marie Midy, Melissa Aldrete, Marcela Calderón Bony, and Emma Gavaldon v.L. Boomkamp.
