♍️ Happy virgo season friends!

TBH has gone on yet another hiatus, this time due to big changes in each of our lives.

We are happily and thankfully both living in NYC now! It has taken time to get settled and into the groove with our full time jobs, surviving the pandemic, and building new social circles.

There are always two sides to every coin; this isolating time has also offered us free time to dive deeper into our individual artistic endeavors. We hope that amidst the tumult of the past two years, you’ve also found time to enjoy and reignite your love for certain hobbies and pastimes, maybe even get into new activities!

Now that we are able to tear it up in the same city, we are committed to using TBH not only as a creative outlet, but also as a breeding ground for new skills. Art is ever-present in our lives, and we want TBH to reflect just how multifaceted we are as a duo. We are both visual artists, with Keyana more heavily focused on dancing, music, and film, and Andrea more focused on fine art, graphic design, and writing.

We both LOVE multimedia story telling and highlighting BIPOC. We have taken this time to hone into what we love as individuals and think deeply about how we can create space and enable one another while creating something beautiful together.

If you’ve made it this far with us - THANK YOU for all your support. THANK YOU for continuing to follow us amidst the ocean of creatives out there.

A lot of these shoots were influenced by the idea of observing how people carry themselves literally and figuratively. It’s interesting to see how people hold themselves, their bodies, but also how their essence shines through. I find people to be extremely precious. 💛

I was born with my mother’s face and my father’s complexion.

I’ve been thinking a lot about where I come from and how it has led me to who I’ve become. At the beginning of the year, I was suffering from a great deal of grief. As the pandemic slowly approached and we went into lockdown- I had to finally face myself. All my pain, my ugly, my mistakes. Then the murder of Ahmaud Arbery sparked a new wave of the BLM movement, which led me into an even darker place. It’s really hard to put into words watching your people getting killed on every media outlet. My anxiety was high and due to shelter in place regulations- I had no out. Fast forward to end of summer, I got fired from my job, left a city where I spent 8 precious years of my life, and I am just now resurfacing from all the bu****it.

I got a new job within a month of being let go that actually values me and pays me what I deserve. I have an extremely caring support system. I bought myself a car! First thing I’ve ever had in my own name. Things are looking up and I don’t think I would have been able to push through without the resilience and resourcefulness I’ve learned from my parents. People who were born 2-3 generations out of slavery, in segregated cities, coming from the deep south and projects in the south Bronx, NYC.

I sometimes need to remind myself that I am truly my ancestors wildest dreams. And if you’ve read this whole thing, thank you. I hope you continue to walk through life with gratitude.

When national Floyd protests began at the end of May, I was numb. I was slow to activate, and I knew that was okay. As a non-Black POC who’s been protesting against and teaching anti-racism for four years since Trump’s rhetoric and actions began surfacing the breadth and depth of White supremacy in this nation, it took time for me to feel into how I could best use my energy and my body for the cause.

One thing I’ve been proud of recently since I moved to NYC in Sept. 2019, is all the art I’ve been doing. Living on my own and having my own space to be creative has been therapy for me. As it turns out, art also served as my therapy in response to the national uprising and the collective whirlwind of emotions we all witnessed and likely felt personally. I got to make this mixed media art piece and sell a few others for charity through .op.collective, protest in Brooklyn and march over the Brooklyn Bridge.

This piece was inspired by my best friend , my closest Black friend, the womxn who’s really shown me what means, what vibrance and authenticity mean. In the sea of vanilla, granola, and homogenous White faces and perspectives where we grew up, Keyana learned how to foster a sense of belonging and resilience that taught her how to be a real friend and ally to Black and non-Black folx.

To all Black folx who have been the shoulder for their White and non-Black POC friends, those forgiving, tirelessly understanding day ones, y’all deserve bucketfuls of Thank yous and eternal good karma. I hope you get to feel as appreciated as you should feel.

If you haven’t checked out our articles “What I’ve learned from 6 years of community organizing and activism” and “How to Be a Friend/Ally to People of Color in 2020” up on the site, it’s a great place to start learning about how to be a better ally and anti-racist.

✨Appreciation Post✨

Post election, I’ve been thinking a lot about the resilience, resourcefulness, and power that all black womxn possess. Our ability to mobilize people, create some of the best art periodt, heal others, push boundaries, and show up for every damn body is insane.

Imani here was our makeup artist for one of TBH’s shoots and she did an amazing job. She is such a fierce artist and we appreciate her so much. She took on 9 different faces, varying in skin types & complexion and made everyone look absolutely beautiful. A testament to being an inclusive artist! On top of that, she made everyone feel GOOD and comfortable in their own skin. This is why representation matters!

If nobody’s told you yet today, this week, this month, or this year, we’ll say it right here—you’re doing great! you’re doing FABULOUSLY. you’re killin it! you’re making the most of your situation, resources, and energy and doing the damn thing, grinding and living. sometimes you’re just surviving, other times you’re vibrating at the highest possible frequency, and people see that.

Praise and affirmation are things human beings need, to excel, to stay motivated, and to feel appreciated. If you don’t get this enough in your day to day, seek it out! If you don’t need it, that’s cool too! But it’s always a great practice to be clear about your wants and needs. Praise and words of affirmation are so important in relationships and the workplace. You got this!
