Art for the People: WPA-Era Paintings from the Dijkstra Collection

Produced by W&T for the Crocker Art Museum‘s exhibition “Art for the People,” this catalog features art from the Sandra and Bram Dijkstra Collection. Showing workers and disenfranchised people from 1929 through World War II, the paintings emphasize the humanity of struggling Americans in a time of hardship. The remarkable design and printing, which bring out the vitality of the artwork, help create a vivid and immersive book. If you would like to experience these works in person, the exhibition is traveling between January 2023 and March 18, 2024, from the Crocker Art Museum to the Oceanside Museum of Art and finally to the Huntington Library.

𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘦, 1906-1916

A blending of historically minded handmade journals and maps and an astonishing collection of large-format sepia- and golden-toned photographs take you back in time to a sacred, beautiful, and wild place-sadly, already vanishing. This University of Minnesota Press book, designed by W&T, is printed on extra-heavy paper; the texture and color of the binding and the gold stamping on the cover reflect those of the original journals.

Scent and Symbolism: Perfumed Objects and Images
Produced by W&T for the renowned Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Scent and Symbolism
captures their glorious exhibition of 140 scent bottles from the Umi-Mori Art Museum in
Hiroshima, Japan. Turning each of the beautifully designed pages, you can almost smell
the fragrances. Choice of paper and cloth and the outstanding printing create a

Winner of a PPN award for design and manufacturing, 𝘒𝘢𝘺 𝘚𝘦𝘬𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪: 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘳, W&T’s catalogue for the Fresno Art Museum’s exhibition, evokes some aspects of the artist’s profoundly serene artworks. The folding piece W&T produced for the Berkeley Art Museum’s Sekimachi exhibition suggests the complexity of some of Sekimachi’s paper pieces.

The works in the Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang collection are subtle ink on paper and difficult to reproduce. How to hold such subtle shades of gray? To reproduce gray ink on gold leaf or shiny black ink on dull black ink? W&T spent many hours comparing color proofs to the original artworks. Winner of a PPN award for design and manufacturing. Published by the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts. W&T copyedited, designed, and produced the book, including press checking the printing at Friesens.

The Vietnamese Girl with Three Tigers and the American General tells an epic story made even more remarkable by the fact that it is true. This privately published memoir depicts the eventful life of a beautiful Vietnamese woman who overcame the tragedies of war, made a daring escape to the United States, and married the American three-star general who had commanded the U.S. 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam. W&T designed and produced the paperback and e-book, using the author’s own paintings throughout.

In 2019, the University of Minnesota Press asked Wilsted & Taylor to create a design for their newly acquired architecture journal--PERS: Preservation, Education & Research. The design uses traditional typographic elements, like decorative rules by W. A. Dwiggins, to create an overall look that is contemporary, architectural, and inviting. Since then, W&T has copy edited and typeset each issue. In 2021, the PERS design won a PPN award. The judges said: “Very elegant typographic treatment and good integration of materials. The pacing feels even.” “Elegant design: a great choice for this journal.”

A visual expression of complex topological meditations by renowned anthropologist Paul Rabinow and Anthony Stavrianakis. No jacket hides the deep blue cloth that provides a midnight sky background for the silver and copper stamping. The interior is typographically extravagant as well as austerely elegant. We were honored to produce Paul’s final three books.
