What an unforgettable week for the Oakman High School FCCLA Chapter!

Our FCCLA President, Cody, proudly represented Oakman High School at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., alongside more than 10,000 students from across the nation.

Competing in the Hospitality and Tourism Level 2 STAR Event, Cody earned a Gold Medal and was named 2nd in the Nation for his outstanding project! This is an incredible achievement and a true testament to his hard work, leadership, and dedication. We couldn’t be more proud of the way he represented our school, our chapter, and our community on the national stage.

This trip was also the experience of a lifetime for Cody and his family. They had the opportunity to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary in our nation’s capital, explore Washington, D.C.’s historic landmarks, and even attend a Major League Baseball game—making memories they will cherish forever.

A very special thank you to Cody’s mother, Heather Studdard Gardner, for accompanying and chaperoning him throughout the trip while I was on maternity leave. Your willingness to step in made this incredible opportunity possible, and I am so grateful for your support and dedication to Cody and our FCCLA chapter.

Congratulations, Cody! Your FCCLA family is beyond proud of you, and we can’t wait to see all that you accomplish in the future.
❤️🤍💙🏅🇺🇸

This week in our Family and Consumer Sciences class, we were reminded that a fun, easy lab is never underrated 🤎🍪

The students wanted to bake chocolate chip and chocolate chunk cookies, and that is exactly what we did! A total of 72 cookies were made, and they definitely brought the appetite because every single one was devoured.

Beyond the sweet treats, this lab was full of hands-on learning. Students practiced using cooling racks and parchment paper, learned how to adjust oven temperature for a hotter oven, and mastered the timing needed for that perfectly soft cookie.

It’s always so much fun cooking with this group. Sweet treats, full bellies, and valuable kitchen skills made for a great week in the lab .

This week’s cooking lab featured Jim ‘N Nick’s famous biscuits, and they were a hit! Students practiced cutting ingredients into dry mixtures and learned how to double a recipe. They turned out so delicious that we didn’t even get a picture of the finished product—just them being devoured! 😄

Thankfully, we managed to save a few to share as a sweet afternoon pick-me-up for our faculty and staff.

Oakman High School FCCLA/classes were very fortunate to have one of our advisory committee members and guest speakers, Jade Kennedy, Assistant Director of Forensic Interviewing and Victim Advocacy at the Walker County Children’s Advocacy Center, speak to our Family & Consumer Sciences and Family Wellness classes today.

Students learned about healthy relationships, different forms of abuse, safe social media practices, and the important role the Walker County Children’s Advocacy Center plays in helping children and families in our community.

We are so appreciative that she took the time to come speak with our students and share her knowledge. She even included some fun, hands-on activities that really helped engage the class!

Who says breakfast is only for mornings? 🍳

This week in Family & Consumer Sciences, students made Breakfast Sausage Casserole for a breakfast-for-lunch lab — and it was a hit!

Students practiced following a recipe, measuring ingredients, using kitchen tools correctly, and working together in groups. Each student had a specific kitchen job to help their team successfully complete the dish.

We also discussed how recipes can be modified by adding ingredients like bacon, ham, onion, spinach, or sun-dried tomatoes. Some students even topped their casserole with ketchup or hot sauce!

Safe to say this lab was egg-cellent! 🥚🍳
