Students grades 7-9 competed in the Dottie Yeck Good Life Essay Writing Contest. Nine Oakwood students’ essays placed in the top twenty-five, and Trajan Malayter (9), a student in Oakwood High School English teacher Emily Sullivan’s class, won first place, receiving a $3000 prize. “Trajan’s story about intentionally creating joy for others during the incredibly challenging time of Covid received the most elite award: first place. It’s an honor to teach a student who so perfectly conveyed the way he made a difference,” Sullivan says. Students who placed or received honorable mentions will be recognized at a ceremony on Dec. 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Woodbourne Library in Washington Township. -Seth Upton

At Oakwood’s Senior Night football game, marching band students write notes to this year’s seniors. “It’s kind of scary to know that someone you look up to is gonna leave, and now you have to take their place, and future freshmen and sophomores are gonna look up to you. It’s like passing the torch of responsibility,” Rocco Ferri (11) said. -Miriam Siff
