“A place of romantic melancholy, where wild waters, wild woods, and savage mountains, speak sternly of a people and a history that are stern.”
~Robert Louis Stevenson
London/Scotland / Episode 6 (August Trip)
Days 5 & 6 of our Scotland whirlwind tour took us to the beautiful city of Inverness. Inverness, meaning “Mouth of the River Ness”, is a city in the Scottish Highlands. It lies near two important battle sites: the 11th-century battle of Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway which took place on the Aird, and the 18th century Battle of Culloden which took place on Culloden Moor (the Battle of Culloden will hold special significance for me, which I’ll explain in another post). It is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and lies within the Great Glen (Gleann Mòr) at its northeastern extremity where the River Ness enters the Beauly Firth.
The first few photos are of Inverness Cathedral, built in 1866 of pink freestone out of Conan Quarry, near Dingwall. The Victorian Episcopalian cathedral church is dedicated to St. Andrew.
Another prominent landmark is Inverness Castle which sits on a cliff overlooking the River Ness. A succession of castles have stood on this site since 1057, although the present structure dates from 1836.
Of course no trip to Inverness would be complete without a stop at Leakey’s Bookshop, which is the largest second-hand bookshop in Scotland, and also seeing the many historic bridges of Inverness.
