I’m 41. Here’s what I needed to hear 10 years ago. If you’re 31, save this.
Buy the damn horse. You can make more money. You cannot make more time.
Stop waiting until you’re “good enough” to show. Enter the class. Screw up the pattern. Get embarrassed. That’s how you get better.
Your friendships and your priorities are about to shift. Let them. Some people are meant to be in your life forever. Some are meant for a chapter. You don’t have to force either one.
Pay attention to how you feel when you pull into the barn. If something you love starts putting a pit in your stomach every time you go there, reevaluate. You are allowed to change barns, trainers, disciplines, goals—or the entire plan. Being miserable doesn’t prove how badly you want it.
Drown out the noise. Social media is going to make it look like everyone has a better horse, more money, more wins, better friendships and a happier life. They don’t. You’re comparing your entire life to the few seconds of theirs they chose to show you.
The right trainer won’t make you feel stupid for asking questions. The right barn won’t make you feel like you have to earn the right to belong there.
Your horse has no idea what you placed. They know how you treated them when you walked out of the pen.
Take the pictures. Take the videos. Especially the boring ones. Someday those ordinary Tuesday nights at the barn will be the ones you wish you could have back.
Use the good tack. Wear the expensive show shirt. Stop waiting for an occasion worthy of the good stuff. This IS the occasion.
You do not need everyone in the horse industry to like you. Find the people who clap when your number gets called and still sit beside you when it doesn’t.
And maybe the biggest one:
You are allowed to change your definition of success.
At 31, I thought success meant proving something.
At 41, I think success is having a life—and a horse life—you actually like living.
Ten years goes really freaking fast.
Ride the horse. Enter the class. Take the trip. Wear the outfit. Take the picture.
