Please see update from Ocean City Mayor Jay A. Gillian on parking, preparation and safety as Hurricane Erin passes by out at sea,
August 20, 2025
Dear Friends,
The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Warning that anticipates exceptionally high tides, peaking at around 7:50 p.m. tomorrow. Complete information on the effects of Hurricane Erin from our Emergency Management team is available at ocnj.us/oem.
I want everyone to be prepared to move their cars to a safe place before the water levels rise. While flooding is possible on all streets, our guests in town should be aware that streets on the bay side of Ocean City — including the Simpson Avenue and Haven Avenue corridors — are often the most prone to tidal flooding.
We are going to open all our municipal parking lots for free parking tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 21). If you are going to take advantage of this service, please transfer your vehicles well in advance of the evening high tide on Thursday and retrieve them when the tides recede on Friday. The roads closer to the beach, including Central and Wesley avenues, are typically at higher elevation. Parking also will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora.
The storm also will bring high winds and rough seas.
Please check your decks and yards and be prepared to secure loose furniture, umbrellas and anything else that may be damaged by the wind. Our OCBP lifeguards have been keeping people out of the ocean or only up to their ankles. Never enter the ocean on an unguarded beach.
Owners on the lagoons and bayfront should check their boats, paddleboards, docks and slips to make sure all lines are secure in advance of the exceptional high tides and winds.
Trash and recycling routes are scheduled for the north end of Ocean City tomorrow before the highest tides, and at this point, we do not anticipate any interruption to that schedule.
I will continue to provide updates throughout this weather event. Please share this information with your friends, neighbors and anybody else who might need to know.
Warm regards,
Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
