V-J Day, or Victory over Japan Day, marks the end of World War II, one of the deadliest and most destructive wars in history. When President Harry S. Truman announced on Aug. 14, 1945, that Japan had surrendered unconditionally, war-weary citizens around the world erupted in celebration.

VJ Day ~ Victory over Japan Day ~ On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was performed in Tokyo Bay, Japan, aboard the battleship USS Missouri BB 63.

Navajo Code Talkers Day, celebrated every year on August 14, is a day that holds great importance in the history of the U.S. This is because the dayrecognizes the contributions of Navajo Marines during World War II.

This holiday honors the contributions of Native Americans / First Nations people who contributed to the United States war effort during World War II, as well as recognizing the evolution of U.S. code related to Native American languages and the participation of First Nations tribe members in U.S. military efforts from many conflicts.

The Code Talkers participated in every major Marine operation in the Pacific theater, giving the Marines a critical advantage throughout the war. During the nearly month-long battle for Iwo Jima, for example, six Navajo Code Talker Marines successfully transmitted more than 800 messages without error.

Agent Orange was first used in Vietnam on August 10, 1961

The Vietnam War may be over, but the battle continues for many Vietnam veterans. Nearly three million service members served in Vietnam and most returned home. But since then, thousands of Vietnam veterans have fought illnesses related to Agent Orange exposure. This deadly toxin has impacted the lives of thousands of veterans and their families but is largely unknown to most Americans.

AGENT ORANGE AWARENESS DAY August 10th

Over 64 years ago, Agent Orange was first used in Vietnam. The date is thought to be August 10, 1961. In 1988, Agent Orange Awareness Day began as a way to reach Vietnam veterans who may have been exposed to Agent Orange. The campaign informed the country through newspaper and radio messages, encouraging veterans to seek assistance through VA programs. Since then, military and veteran organizations have continued to promote the observance.

On August 10th each year, Agent Orange Awareness Day provides information regarding the effects of Agent Orange. It also serves as a reminder of the lasting damage a single decision can cause.

In the early 1960s, Americans used the herbicide in Vietnam to clear thick foliage from battlegrounds to eliminate the enemy’s protective ground cover.
Those exposed to the chemical suffer a wide range of negative medical effects including: AL amyloidosis, Diabetes Mellitus, Type II, Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkins, Lymphoma, Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma, Parkinson’s Disease, Prostate Cancer, Respiratory Cancer and Soft Tissue Sarcoma

The use of Agent Orange impacted U.S. troops and the Vietnamese troops and civilians. It cost hundreds of thousands of lives and continues to impact survivors today.

Greene, 55, of Schenectady, N.Y., died Aug. 5, in Kabul, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when a member of the Afghan National Army opened fire on a delegation of general officers and other dignitaries who were conducting an inspection tour.

At the rank of Major General, Harold J. Greene was the highest-ranking American service member killed by hostile action since Lt. General Timothy J. Maude was killed in the September 11 attacks, and the highest-ranking service member killed on foreign soil during a war since Rear Admiral Rembrandt Cecil Robinson was killed during the Vietnam War in May 1972. To date, Greene is also the highest-ranking American officer to be killed in combat in the ongoing Global War on Terrorism.

The Purple Heart History of August 7 - 1782

The award known as the Purple Heart has a history that reaches back to the waning days of the American Revolution. The Continental Congress had forbidden General George Washington from granting commissions and promotions in rank to recognize merit. Yet Washington wanted to honor merit, particularly among the enlisted soldiers. On August 7, 1782, his general orders established the Badge of Military Merit.

Washington stated that the award was to be a permanent one, but once the Revolution ended, the Badge of Merit was all but forgotten until the 20th century.

General John J."Blackjack" Pershing suggested a need for an award for merit in 1918, but it was not until 1932 that the Purple Heart was created in recognition of Washington's ideals and for the bicentennial of his birth.

#8/6/2011

On 6 August 2011, a U.S. Boeing CH-47 Chinook military helicopter, call sign 'Extortion 17', was shot down while transporting a quick reaction force attempting to reinforce an engaged unit of Army Rangers in Wardak province, west of Kabul, Afghanistan.

The resulting crash killed all 38 people on board — 25 American special operations personnel, five United States Army National Guard and Army Reserve crewmen, seven Afghan commandos, and one Afghan interpreter — as well as a U.S. military working dog.

It is considered the worst loss of U.S Military life in a single incident in the Afghanistan campaign, surpassing Operation Red Wings in 2005 (Note: during Operation Red Wings, on 28 June 2005, a Chinook helicopter carrying a U.S. Navy SEAL team was shot down by a RPG round as it attempted to extract U.S. troops on the ground).

The deaths included: 15 U.S. Navy Seals from the Naval Special Warfare Department Development Group's Gold Squadron "Seal Team 6".
Michael Strange, Louis James Langlais, Thomas Ratzlaff, Heath Robinson, Stephen Mills, Matthew Mason, Kevin Houston, Brian Robert Bill, Jason Workman, Aaron Carson Vaughn, John Douangdara.
