It’s not pretty, but I am starting on my Pennsylvania list of beautiful B&Bs and independent inns and jewel-box hotels. This is in no special order. I am not done with my NJ list, so I have no business working on a PA list at this time. Oh well!! 🤷🏼‍♀️

For guests who want to stay in an independent inn or B&B, it is often difficult (almost onerous) to find the right accommodation for their needs in the exact right place. Often the information on TripAdvisor, Expedia, etc. is NOT up to date, and misleading! My advice: Google a state or regional B&B professional association. For example: there is a Midwest Association of Independent Inns (https://mwinns.com), where you can search by state, amenity or experience.

I love the Midwest. I was lucky enough to live north of Chicago for a few years as a child, and fell in love with Wisconsin when we spend the summer of 1976 at a cottage at Lake Geneva. So when looking for a Lake Geneva B&B, I accidentally found and fell in love with this jewel box in Sheboygan: . The historic Greek Revival B&B has just two perfect suites and a cottage. It is the perfect blend of honoring the building’s history and spirit, but with sophisticated, bright, cheerful decor. I’m sharing some photos from their Instagram and Facebook accounts. Friends that know me know that I love American history and especially love the utopian movement of the mid-19th century. New Harmony, Indiana is such a place: their history is rich with that unique American optimism. The icing on the history cake is the B&B. This is a beautifully restored Victorian, absolutely filled with color, pattern, texture but not overwhelming. President Taft stayed there. The breakfasts look scrumptious too! The crisp, cool weather in NJ has me thinking about the mountains and higher elevations where the air is always cooler. In scrolling with this in mind, I found this beautiful lodge in Montana called . What a beautiful place: the cozy rooms, the views, the alfresco dining and the food looks amazing too!! Ocean Grove is a special community on the beach in Monmouth County, NJ with living history and a very special appeal. As one the most successful Methodist Camps Associations of the 19th century it retains its Victorian and religious character. With about 14 bed and breakfast inns in about a square mile, it has something for everyone, especially now that stylish and chic is open! They were mentioned in magazines Instagram account. From the very minimalist chic to the traditional theres a lot of rooms and styles to choose from!

It’s a work in progress: my Airtable spreadsheet of all open B&Bs, small inns, lodges and working farm B&Bs in NJ. One of the issues is trying to keep up with oldies closing, and new ones opening up! More states to come.

After a year's hiatus, I am back! I hope to post five days a week on my wish list of beautifully designed inns, B&Bs, and other kinds of accommodations, from the iconic Grand Hacienda in New Mexico to the rock and roll chic Hugh in Cape May, NJ.

I am on the lookout for the best-dressed, most stylish, chic B&Bs and inns that are also rooted in history and authentic, regional culture.

I am not an innkeeper; I am not even an aspiring innkeeper or realtor, but I may share some B&Bs that are on the market in hopes that someone will see my post, buy the inn, and revive its storied past!
