We cancelled brunch the next morning just to come back to this beach.

Chileno Bay is a protected marine reserve about 20 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. Free entry. Calm, clear water. Easy for first-time snorkelers — even our youngest fell in love with the fish.

But there’s one thing I wish someone had told us before we went, and it would’ve ruined the day if I hadn’t figured it out.

Swipe through for everything we packed, what to rent, when to go, and the warning you’ll want to save 👉

Comment CABO and I’ll DM you “The Cabo with Kids Family Notes” — our 5-day breakdown with grandparents in tow, what to pack, where we ate, the beaches worth the drive, and the warnings I wish we’d had.
It’s the doc I would’ve paid for before this trip. You can have it free.

Thank you for hosting big sister’s first surf lesson in Cabo 🌊

Parent POV: before booking my daughter’s first surf lesson in Cabo, I had questions.

Would it feel beginner-friendly?
Would her coach stay close?
Would they be patient if she got nervous?
Could I watch without hovering and making her more anxious?

We booked with at Costa Azul, and this ended up being such a calm, sweet first surf experience.

Her coach stayed close, gave her time, and helped her take it one wave at a time. No rushing. No pressure. Just encouragement.

This was actually big sister’s moment on our Cabo birthday trip, and I’m so glad we made space for it.

She wiped out, tried again, and then she did it.

Now she wants to go again.

Save this if you’re planning Cabo with kids and wondering whether surf lessons are too much for beginners 🌊

Money exchange in Mexico with kids - the unpopular take.

Skip to the bullets if you want the quick version. Stay if you want the why.

The internet says: never exchange at the airport, the rate is bad.

The honest version for families: with 2 kids, 4 grandparents, and a rental car waiting, convenience won.

What we did:

→ Exchanged $500 USD at the airport booth right after immigration.

→ Covered cash needs for the whole trip: tips, grocery runs, parking attendants, beach rentals, small markets, vendors.

→ Used a credit card (no foreign transaction fees) for restaurants and bigger purchases.

Why pesos mattered: grocery baggers, parking attendants, beach vendors, tips — all easier in pesos. Tourist spots accept USD, but at a worse rate than the booth gave you.

What Id skip:

→ Don’t exchange way more than you’ll use.
You’ll convert back at the end and lose money twice.

→ Don’t rely only on cards. Small vendors and tips want pesos.

The verdict:

Solo travelers or couples? Skip the airport. You have flexibility.

Families with kids + grandparents?
Convenience wins. One exchange after
landing = no scavenger hunt for cash mid-trip.

Cabo game plan loading ✈️

2 little girls.
4 grandparents.
1 birthday trip.

The goal is simple: make it feel special without making everyone exhausted.

So here’s the plan:

→ Flights that protect everyone’s sanity, not just the cheapest option
→ A stay that feels easy, comfortable, and functional for all ages
→ One main experience, not five
→ Buffer time built in on purpose
→ A birthday celebration that feels sweet, simple, and not overdone

This trip isn’t about doing everything.

It’s about celebrating our girl, making space for rest, and creating memories with both sets of grandparents while we can.

Less rushing.
More connection.
More moments we’ll actually remember.
