The forest products industry took a hit when the Georgia-Pacific mill closed in Early County, but Georgia Forestry Association President and CEO Tim Lowrimore says the region's long-term outlook is still strong.

"We have an abundance of trees and forest, a good climate for harvesting timber, and a very supportive state government," he says.

Wilcox County's cities of Abbeville and Rochelle carry their names from France, and every July, the county leans into that heritage with the Bastille Day BBQ. The second annual celebration took place July 10โ€“11 at the Newt Hudson Ag Center and Recreation Fields in Rochelle, featuring a Georgia BBQ Association-sanctioned cookoff, an antique tractor show, live music, and more. Proceeds benefited the Wilcox County Cancer Coalition.

It's the kind of community event South Georgia does well: rooted in history, built around good food, and worth putting on the calendar next year.

Most people don't associate South Georgia with French heritage. But in Wilcox County, the connection runs deeper than most realize.

Our Industry & Business section profiles the people behind South Georgia's most significant employers: the operators, managers, and leaders keeping the regional economy moving.

This week: Chris Stewart, general manager of PCC Airfoils in Douglas. If you've ever flown on a Boeing 737 or an Airbus, there's a good chance you've relied on engine components made in Coffee County.

PCC Airfoils injects $25 million into the local economy annually, plans to grow 5 percent per year over the next decade, and employs a workforce Stewart is intentional about keeping local. He's also got a clear-eyed take on what it takes to build a skilled workforce pipeline in South Georgia and why the region's colleges are the right partners to do it.

Four years after competing in Georgia FLEX, Chloe Paulk is still building. What started as Cake it with Chloe in a home kitchen is now a gluten-free cake mix brand on shelves across the region. That's proof that the benefits of this program don't stop when the confetti falls.

Worth County is getting national television exposure this fall. The Worth County Economic Development Authority partnered with Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid to produce a five-minute feature on the county's business climate, workforce, and quality of life, along with a short commercial airing nationally this August.

Beginning August 24, the full segment begins distribution to more than 170 public television stations across the country โ€” running as interstitial programming through 2027. It's a significant platform for a South Georgia county and a direct push to put Worth County in front of businesses, investors, and site selectors nationwide.
