Update: Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer Zachary Vasquez, 26, of Alpine, was reunited with his K-9, “Guido.” Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson, along with a DPS sergeant, traveled to El Paso to visit Vasquez and present him with a check.

As you may recall, on June 23, an accident occurred in which, a vehicle collided with Vasquez.

His K-9, Guido, was unharmed and was wagging his tail when they reunited. It was a clear reminder of the unbreakable bond between an officer and his police dog.

Officer Dodson visited Vásquez to present him with a check for $10,000 to help cover the costs of his recovery.

The Alpine Country Club will also hold a fundraiser on August 15.

Dodson adds that Officer Vásquez is doing well and looking forward to returning to Alpine and sleeping in his own bed.

The DPS, the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, the Alpine Fire Department, and Vásquez’s family appreciate the prayers and support of the entire community during this time.

THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY SAYS IT RECENTLY RECOVERED CESIUM-137, A RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL FOUND IN THE GROUND IN MIDLAND COUNTY.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety - West Texas Region, on Friday, July 24, an officer from the Radiological and Nuclear Unit was conducting a routine patrol near County Road 1210 when an alarm was triggered on his radiation detection radar system.

Using additional radiation detection equipment, the officer detected that a radioactive source of Cesium-137 was emitting radiation from underground.

Local, state, and federal teams responded to the scene and located the object 6 to 8 inches below the surface.
Agents safely removed the radioactive material, which they say was manufactured in April 1967.

*According to the CDC, Cesium-137 (Cs-137) is produced through nuclear fission and is used in medical devices, reactors, weapons, meters, and to measure the thickness of materials such as paper, photographic film, or metal sheets.*

A FATHER HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH CAPITAL MURDER AFTER MIDLAND POLICE REPORTED THAT HIS 2-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WAS FOUND UNCONSCIOUS INSIDE A LOCKED VEHICLE AND LATER DIED.

Officers responded to a call on Sunday at 8 p.m. regarding a report of an unconscious girl locked inside a vehicle.

Officers identified the girl’s father as Lorenzo Rodríguez.

Family members told police that they had gone to the home to check on Rodríguez and his daughter, since he had been drinking the night before.

After repeatedly knocking on the front door with no response, they removed a window air conditioner unit and found Rodríguez asleep. He had apparently been asleep since 11:00 a.m.

After waking him, the family members could not find the girl in the house; she was finally found inside a KIA passenger car parked outside, which was not running.

Family members broke a window to get the girl out and took her to Midland Memorial Hospital, where she was confirmed deceased.

Following the investigation, Rodríguez was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with his daughter’s death.
Rodríguez is being held at the Midland County Jail on $1.5 million bail.
