Throughout my career in law enforcement, I have worked with hundreds of deputies, supervisors, commanders, and executives. Very few have earned my respect to the degree that Aaron Perry has. I have known Aaron for nearly twenty years and had the privilege of working side by side with him for six of....

“That's not a private office. ... She can go do whatever she wants on her private property, but within the chamber, she needs to make sure she's being politically neutral as it pertains to what she's representing or what flag she's flying. I mean, the law is very, very clear on this."

— Rep. Trevor Lee

“The law only applies to government entities and school employees. I am neither. This is something that I have done in my individual capacity. The city of Centerville as a government entity has not engaged in any conduct. There has been no conduct by Centerville City that would violate this statute.”

“There's a quote I've heard that if you want something done, ask a busy mom. It's because you just figure out how to do it. You figure out how to get it done. There's maybe a lot of late nights. There's maybe a lot of tweaking or adjusting of plans. There's a lot of issues that get taken care of because of just sheer grit and determination. And I have a lot of grit and a lot of determination. I think that a profound dedication to any cause will allow you to be successful at it.”

— Lili Bitner, House District 17 candidate

Lili Bitner has an optimistic outlook on tackling big issues. “I think there are very few problems on this earth that don’t have solutions,” she said. “It just takes somebody with enough grit and effort and work to look for them, search for them and then to build coalition and consensus arou...

“It's been an uncomfortable process, but a really important process. I've grown through the process and learned. But more than anything, it just falls back to my motivation for running and understanding that I can make a difference in my community. And … I grew up here and lived close to my grandfather, my grandparents and my parents, and I want to give my kids that opportunity. I want to give the next generation the same life that I had growing up.”

— Sam Barlow, House District 17 candidate

Sam Barlow said he grew up inside District 17, hiking the hills of the district. Now, he’s running to represent the district, hoping to fill the seat being vacated by his father, Stewart Barlow. “It’s been an uncomfortable process, but a really important process,” Barlow said about the campa...

“There's absolutely no way I'm going to fail at it. I have the tenacity, and I have those working relationships with ... our mayors, with our city council members, with our legislators to be able to address the problems of today and of tomorrow. And I very much want to represent the people, and I feel like too long we have been using the same paradigm of leadership and the same paradigm of elected officials. And some have worked out, but I feel by and large, most people have been dissatisfied with it because it hasn't really addressed a lot of the problems that we face.”

— Jon Atkin, Davis County sheriff candidate

Jon Atkin isn’t shy about stating where he thinks improvement is necessary within the Davis County Sheriff’s Office and within law enforcement in general. He realizes speaking about it may not be the best career choice, and when he said that in a recent interview with the Standard-Examiner, his ...

“It's hard for me to drive anywhere in Davis County without remembering a call that I carry with me, whether it was an officer shot in the line of duty that I responded to or some horrific accident or something, and I just care. And I feel like it's something I'm supposed to do, frankly. It's not so much about what I want. … but it's more about where I feel like I'm supposed to be.”

— Aaron Perry, Davis County sheriff candidate

Aaron Perry is trying to return home in his bid to become the next Davis County sheriff. “I personally feel like the agency you start with, if you’ve been there for a while, is home,” he said. “It’s the agency that took a chance on me. It’s the agency that sent me through the police […...

Fatal car accident on Oak Hills Drive in Layton.

From Lt. Clint Bobrowski of the Layton Police Department:

“At about 3:47 p.m. this afternoon, Layton Police Department received a 911 phone call. Individuals reported a severe traffic accident in the area about 2000 East Oak Hills Drive. When officers arrived, they located two vehicles involved in a significant traffic collision with a total of four patients. Personnel from Layton Fire immediately began emergency medical care of all of the patients. Three of the occupants were transported to local area hospitals with significant injuries, and despite lifesaving efforts, a fourth occupant of a vehicle did pass away on scene.”

“We don't know what happened yet. The Layton City Traffic Division officers are out investigating the circumstances surrounding the traffic collision as we speak … and the hope is that we'll be able to piece the evidence together and be able to determine the cause of the traffic collision.”

“Right now we're working two major accidents, one here and then one on the west side of our city. It's a rollover accident. We're in the middle of the 100 deadliest days of the summer, and so as a police department, we support DPS's message regarding traffic safety, reminding drivers to slow down, maintain their distance, wear their seatbelt and stay vigilant when they're driving.”

"Weber County should be the shining light in the state of Utah. If we implement the change that we need, lessen this government, make it more effective, stop raising taxes — I ain't raising taxes — if we do those things, that's how we implement the change. So stop doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result and actually say, 'Hey, this guy is a business owner. He's running for us, the people,' and I think it's up to them."

— Duane Kearsley, Weber County Commission Seat A candidate

Editor’s note: The Standard-Examiner has invited primary candidates from Weber and Davis counties to sit down to answer questions from the editorial board and share their vision. Over the next month, the Standard-Examiner will share the highlights from these conversations, giving candidates equal ...
