To cap off our "Once Upon a Time in Cinema" August film series, we are taking a trip back to 1969 for a double-feature night celebrating the raw grit, passion, and fading glamour of Acting and independent filmmaking.

We are kicking the night off early at 7:00 PM with a special screening of an award-winning short film by New Ogden Cinema’s very own Brandie Lee McDonald, followed by a live Filmmaker Q&A to dive straight into the craft.

Then at 7:30 PM, Quentin Tarantino takes the screen with his nostalgic, sun-drenched love letter to the movies: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Follow TV Western star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his long-time stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) as they navigate an industry passing them by. Remembering your lines on set is brutal, but surviving a changing Hollywood takes everything you’ve got.

Come early, grab a Rick Dalton's Whiskey Sour, load up on free popcorn, and celebrate the grand finale of our cinema series with local and classic film alike.

How do you write a movie about flowers, passion, and the pain of creation?

Screenwriting books tell you to follow formulas, create high stakes, and add car chases. Charlie Kaufman threw the rulebook in the trash and wrote a movie about his own crippling inability to write a movie.

Tonight, Once Upon a Time in Cinema explores the agonizing art of the screenplay with Adaptation. (2002).

It is a rare feat of filmmaking: a movie that deconstructs the classic screenwriting structure while simultaneously pulling off one of the most original narratives in modern cinema. Backed by Oscar-nominated performances from Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep, plus Chris Cooper’s Academy Award-winning turn, Adaptation. proves that turning real passion onto the page is the hardest fight a writer can face.

Step inside, beat the writer’s block, and sip on tonight’s signature drink, The Ghost Orchid.

Staring at a blank page is agony. Adapting an "unadaptable" book is war.

War is hell, but have you ever tried writing a screenplay?

This Monday, August 24th, our Once Upon a Time in Cinema series takes a neurotic, brilliant dive into the craft of Screenwriting with Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman’s masterwork, Adaptation. (2002).

Nicolas Cage delivers double the brilliance as real-life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and his fictional twin brother, Donald. While Charlie tortures himself trying to write a faithful script about orchids, Donald writes a trashy, cliché-ridden thriller that immediately gets bought. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards—including Best Adapted Screenplay—and taking home the Oscar for Chris Cooper’s legendary supporting performance, it stands as the ultimate meta-masterpiece on artistic angst, writer's block, and the insanity of Hollywood.

Come grab a seat, order our featured cocktail—The Ghost Orchid—and load up on free popcorn while watching pure writing madness unfold on screen.

"Do you have a white suit? Keep it clean."

Every indie film crew relies on a few key ingredients: unpaid volunteers, an overqualified cinematographer who brought his own camera, and a guy willing to run across eight lanes of freeway traffic for thirty bucks.

Bowfinger is a love letter to the crew members who make the impossible happen on set every single day—even if the producer is paying them in stock options for a company that doesn't exist.

Got plans for Monday night? You do now. Come celebrate the craft of guerrilla filmmaking with us. Order a Chubby Rain from the bartender, grab a bowl of free theater popcorn, and enjoy one of the sharpest Hollywood parodies ever committed to film.
