Junction City News JUNCTION CITY NEWS 84-89 on Historic 25th Street, Ogden, as renovation begins. Wasatch Connection. Ofcs Ogden & SLC. Ogden's 1st independent publication.

Junction City News began when the first blast of buildings on Historic 25th Street began renovation. Publisher/Editor Ron Atencio was working for the San Francisco Chroncicle & Examiner (SFNA) in early 80s when he visited Ogden and experienced the excitement. He came to Ogden to publish the Junction City News in May of 1984. First issue was September. JCN expanded to SLC and held offices at that l

ocation until 2009 on 3rd south/Main. Offices in Ogden were 107 Historic 25th street. JCN published 48 issues in the five years as a monthly.

Junction City News production pit is in the foreground of our space at 107 Historic 25th street 1984-89. The ceilings were so tall. This space in the building was once the entrance to the hotel and the lower level was where the furnace was but would have been hidden at the time from 1888. It was our production pit. And full of water when we moved in due to leaky roof. That was fixed by then owner George Bell for us to move in. I loved this space and spent so much time in there and even had a cot in a room on the side for the few hours sleep then back at it at deadlines. Montly's were fast. We would work for days and all nighters laying out the Junction City New magazine.

In this day we had the first rendition of apple mac which we had the se30 which i still have. It helped us print out type rather then going to a typesetter which was so expensive and we could make the beginnings of an ad with mac draw. It was a big breakthrough in the publishing industry. But we still had to take the boards to the printer to be photographed and negatives made which made the plates. What a great process. Cut and paste came from this exact process... we cut the type and art with exacto and then pasted with wax or rubber cement. Eventually even glue sticks. Color was done by overlays as we did with the covers and centerfold. Now we can send a whole publication over the internet connection as pdf's and never sees paper or plates. Great times!

This space was where Good Life Cafe began in the balcony area which of course was not there then. I go in and it seems so small and at that time it was just so big and had 20 foot ceilings. You can see my production desk area. In the front was the editorial and sales dept. The stained glass came from a church in Ogden purchased by George Bell and installed by Jodie Green who had a Glassworks in this space in the 70s making wonerful stained glass windows all over town. She and her then husband Mike did great work. They eventually moved the shop in her historic home on 24th street. Unfortunately after we left this space antique dealers moved in for a few decades and the glass was sold for 3grand to some business in Yellowstone I was told. What a loss. I wish I could remember what church it came out of but it was torn down in the 70s. It really belongs there and should have stayed in Ogden as you can see how amazing it looked with all the light that came into the space. I love going into the building and it brings so many memories of wonderful times which seems ages ago. The front door is original as is the awesome brass door handle and the moment I touch that it and it has that certain click I go back in history. Ron J. Atencio, Publisher/Editor/Art Director/founder.
