As we prepare for another blast of Arctic air starting Sunday night, with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected on Tuesday and bitter cold lasting for several days, here’s a checklist to help everyone stay safe and prepared:
1. Wrap Pipes: Insulate your pipes and place a heater near your well pump to prevent freezing.
2. Leave Water Running: Keep a steady trickle of water flowing to prevent pipes from freezing.
3. Stock Up on Food: Have non-perishable food that doesn’t need refrigeration or cooking.
4. Keep Drinks Outside (But Don’t Let Them Freeze): Use the cold to store water, sodas, etc., but ensure they don’t freeze.
5. Alternative Heat Source: If you rely on electric heat, consider getting an alternative heat source like propane or a wood-burning stove. Heavy clothing and blankets are a good backup.
6. Fuel for Generators: Get gas for your generators before Tuesday’s snow and ice hit.
7. Charge Phones & Backup Batteries: Charge your phones and buy battery packs or car chargers.
8. Check on Elderly and Neighbors: Stay in touch with elderly family, friends, and neighbors to ensure their safety.
9. Fill Bathtubs & Washing Machines: Fill them with water for flushing toilets in case of a power outage.
