U.S. House District 7 Democratic Candidate Brian Poindexter said that even though his opponent has been the subject of national news coverage for allegations of abuse, he will not use those allegations in a political battle. In fact, he said he is not changing his campaign plans one bit. He will continue to deliver his message of “working for Ohio’s working families,” and will stay out of using his opponent’s legal issues in his campaign for the District 7 seat.

On Monday, the Solon City Council voted not to put an issue on the November ballot that would have enabled the city council to change residential to residential zoning within the city, without a vote by residents. After several residents again spoke out against the proposed residential zoning change ordinance, the city council voted 4 to 1 against adding such an ordinance to the ballot.

Scott Hildenbrand, chief of Hambden Volunteer Fire Department, spoke to reporters outside the Geauga County Courthouse after Richard Vandevander, former treasurer and assistant chief of the VFD, pleaded not guilty to theft, aggravated theft of $1.5 million or more, telecommunications fraud, money laundering, falsification, and forgery.

Investigators say Mr. Vandevander, 59, spent more than three years diverting department funds to cover his gambling losses at the Jack Thistledown Racino in North Randall.

A Geauga County grand jury on Monday indicted Richard Vandevander, 59, of Chardon, for aggravated theft of $1.5 million or more, telecommunications fraud, money laundering, falsification, and forgery. Investigators say the former treasurer and assistant chief embezzled from the Hambden Volunteer Fire Department for more than three years.

Chief Scott Hildenbrand, who also works as the county sheriff, said there were no signs.
