I filmed with Urmat and Ayker a few years ago, in a remote valley in central Krygyzstan. For most of the spring and summer, they live in a small hut, with no running water or electricity, where they look after their animals, shepherding them out daily to graze in the vast valley below. Their dreams and destinies are intertwined with those of their animals, and their semi-nomadic life.

Stallion of a Dream: California and the Camarillo White Horse - Saturday December 7th - 8:15 Ovation Theater, IMH, Kentucky

“Stallion of a Dream” documents the lineage of a historic breed of horse that dates back to an all-white stallion bought by Adolfo Camarillo in 1921. Exploring how the breed become symbolic for the city of Camarillo and the state of California, and documenting local efforts to keep the horses from dying out, the film illustrates how one mans passion and ingenuity has lasted through the generations and is now embodied in the living history of a beautiful horse.

Wings of Kyrgyzstan - Saturday December 7th, 7:30pm - Mane Theater, IMH, Kentucky

As much a song poem as a film - “Wings of Kyrgyzstan” is a kaleidoscope of life in the magnificent high steppe of Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia, where alongside the mythology of the horse, the harsh realities of subsistence life and the loneliness of routine in remote regions causes tension and heartache. Here, horses are considered the “wings of man”. The rhythm of rural life underscores this reverent cinematic journey, where vivid portraits of young men and women, semi-nomads and their elders share their personal stories and aspirations, with the haunting music and soaring voices of the traditional folk ensemble Ordo Sakhna completing the cycle.
