Meet the Presses!

We are excited to be building a cool community of printers in town as we establish our Carriage House Print Lab here on the castle campus.

Our friend Eric Woods of firecrackerpress was in town from St. Louis recently to tune-up our antique printing presses, lead hands-on demonstrations, and help us spread the word about this new project. We even hosted our first little happy hour Block Party, meant to gather the printing community and share more about our vision for activation in the coming months.

That vision includes open studio hours, classes, and an artist residency.

This is a part of a bigger goal of sharing the story of the impact of George Joslyn’s Western Newspaper Union to a new generation through interactive experiences.

This event is geared towards letterpress printers, from beginners to professionals. It is a great opportunity for letterpress people to get together and talk, see demonstrations, get practical training on various pieces of equipment, and be able to buy (or sell off) equipment and materials.

I'm so sad to know that Nikki has passed. Condolences to her partner and family. -- Denise

The poet and activist was a leading figure of the Black Arts Movement. Giovanni was working on her upcoming book of poetry, set to publish in the fall.

It is a rainy warm day here in Omaha, peaceful and cozy on my press porch. I started the first 4-up run for Earthlings on Rainbows , poems by Nikki Giovanni. This book includes one new poem and fourteen others dating from 1990 to 2020. The book will be completed, I hope, next summer. -Denise
