Oklahoma City already knows what it takes to win a championship.

Now ESPN has the Oklahoma City Thunder back in the Championship Favorites tier heading into the new season. ⚡🏆

For OKC, this isn’t about proving they can get there anymore.

They’ve already done that.

The question now is whether this core can make another run and add another title to what they’ve already built.

With Shai still leading the way and the Thunder remaining one of the deepest, most talented teams in the league, the expectations are exactly where they should be.

At the top.

OKC is not chasing its first taste of championship success.

OKC might have a rotation problem… except it’s the kind of problem every contender wants.

Ajay Mitchell is entering Year 3, and the Thunder may have reached the point where it doesn’t really matter where he fits on the depth chart.

Last season, Mitchell took a major leap:

• 13.6 PPG
• 3.6 APG
• 3.3 RPG
• 34.7% from 3

And now, with Luguentz Dort gone, there’s another opportunity opening up in the backcourt.

Cason Wallace may have the edge defensively, but Mitchell brings something different: another creator who can handle the ball, attack downhill and take pressure off Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

That could make him valuable as a starter.

But it could also make him even more dangerous as the lead scorer off the bench.

The biggest question for OKC may not be whether Mitchell deserves a role.

It’s how big that role should become.

Because if Mitchell takes another leap, the Thunder could have yet another young piece ready to become much more than anyone expected.

Year 3 could be the year Ajay Mitchell makes it impossible to take him off the floor.

Throwback to one of the wildest individual seasons in Thunder history.

Russell Westbrook’s 2016-17 MVP campaign was pure chaos in the best possible way. ⚡

Night after night, Russ played with ridiculous pace, aggression and intensity, carrying a massive offensive load and turning every game into a show.

That season became one of the defining chapters of his OKC legacy.

The triple-doubles.

The clutch moments.

The emotion.

The relentless attack.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is an elite MVP-level scorer, but his impact goes way beyond putting the ball in the basket. 👀

He’s also had the most steals in the NBA over the last five regular seasons, which shows just how disruptive he can be on the defensive end.

When you combine his scoring, playmaking, efficiency, and ability to create turnovers, there really isn’t much he can’t do on both ends of the floor.

Shai is the undisputed best two-way player in the league right now, and he’s only getting better. 🏆

Dion Waiters just gave more insight into how shocking Kevin Durant’s 2016 decision was inside the Thunder locker room.

After OKC blew a 3-1 lead to Golden State in the Western Conference Finals, Waiters says Durant texted him and Serge Ibaka about bringing the group back for one more year.

They were talking in a group chat.

Then KD stopped responding.

Not long after, Durant signed with the Warriors.

Waiters says Russell Westbrook eventually hit him up in disbelief:

“You see this s***? This s*** crazy.”

That Thunder team was one win away from the Finals, believed they could beat Cleveland, and apparently thought there was still a real chance to run it back.

Instead, KD joined the team that had just eliminated them.

Nikola Topić has already lived through more adversity than most players face in an entire career.

He became one of the youngest players ever to step onto a EuroLeague court.

Then came an ACL tear.

His rookie season? Gone.

He spent the entire year working his way back.

Then, just before his second season could begin, another devastating challenge arrived:

Cancer. Topić fought through it.

Beat it.

And eventually made his return to basketball.

13 G League games.
10 NBA games.

All before turning 21.

And somehow, he kept finding his way back to the court.
