Friends and fans, this cake was made in Israel for pianist Junior Mance's 85th birthday; the Trio opened the jazz series, “Hot Jazz in Israel”. Thanks to Mor and Ziv for having it made. If you know of a bakery in New York that can duplicate this figurine, Gloria is requesting suggestions for Junior’s 90th birthday celebration! Please email her at [email protected] gmail.com

Back by popular demand, Sunday night (4-23-17) on KGOU - Your NPR Source at 11 p.m. (CDT), we feature an encore live performance recorded by Backstage Jazz of the The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra at the The Simmons Center in Duncan, OK. The performance and live recording captured on October 28, 2014 turned out so well, the The Glenn Miller Orchestra now has a LIVE album available at glennmillerorchestra.com of this historic occasion.

One of the greatest jazz hits we feature in the program is the Jerry Grey and Carl Sigmund classic written on the band bus, Pennsylvania 6-5000. Music director Nick Hilscher explains in our backstage interview, “Pennsylvania 6-5000 was the old telephone number for the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York City – ‘PE 6-5000’.”

Al Jarreau -- Moonlighting (Studio, TOTP)

One of our gemstone enlightening guests on the Backstage Jazz public radio series is the vocal crossover jazz legend Al Jarreau.

Today I learned Al is in the hospital suffering from exhaustion after being on a stealth concert tour. The doctors recommend Jarreau cancel his remaining spring tour concert dates in 2017. Al is sad about having to retire from touring. It is no surprise Al's son reports on his Twitter feed today he was singing one of his known TV series hits, "Moonlighting" to the nursing staff caring for him. At age 76, Al Jarreau looks back at a magical and inspiring career of 50 years.

In my last interview with Al at the OKC Jazz Fest in June, he ended with never ending spirit by encouraging me, as he says, "Keep going, and don't stop".

Thank you Al Jarreau for inspiring 5 decades of loyal fans that don't stop listening, and are still with you today.
