Saddened to hear of the passing of jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco. So thankful to have been involved in documenting many of the jazz greats throughout the last decade on public radio. One of the artists I had the honor of covering at the UCO Jazz Lab was this legendary jazz organist and person. We are thankful to have his influential stories live on. RIP

Be sure to enjoy America's art form in April during JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH. Bassist and vocalist Katie Thiroux Trio featuring clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Peplowski have a live date coming up at The University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab in Edmond on Friday night - 4/12/19 at 8:00 p.m. We'll be there covering it. They also perform Saturday night - 4/13/19 at Duet Jazz Club in Tulsa.

Back by popular demand, Sunday night (4-23-17) on KGOU - Your NPR Source at 11 p.m. (CDT), we feature an encore live performance recorded by Backstage Jazz of the The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra at the The Simmons Center in Duncan, OK. The performance and live recording captured on October 28, 2014 turned out so well, the The Glenn Miller Orchestra now has a LIVE album available at glennmillerorchestra.com of this historic occasion.

One of the greatest jazz hits we feature in the program is the Jerry Grey and Carl Sigmund classic written on the band bus, Pennsylvania 6-5000. Music director Nick Hilscher explains in our backstage interview, “Pennsylvania 6-5000 was the old telephone number for the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York City – ‘PE 6-5000’.”
