Helena Foulkes has defeated incumbent Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, ending McKee’s bid for another term. The former CVS executive returned for a rematch after narrowly losing to McKee in the 2022 primary.

The race centered heavily on dissatisfaction with state government and McKee’s handling of the troubled Washington Bridge replacement project. Foulkes campaigned on bringing a different approach to state leadership and entered Election Day with a significant advantage in recent polling.

President Donald Trump gave three close White House aides — Natalie Harp, Margo Martin and Chamberlain Harris — $45,000 each in cash as holiday gifts, according to newly released financial disclosures. Each earns $150,000 annually, making the gifts equivalent to nearly one-third of their government salaries. Trump also gave Oval Office operations director Walt Nauta $20,000. The White House says the gifts were personal, unrelated to the aides’ government duties and legally permissible. However, ethics experts have raised questions about whether payments of that size to federal employees could violate restrictions against supplementing government salaries.

Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, has won the Democratic nomination for New Hampshire’s closely watched 1st Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race early Wednesday after a tight contest, with Shaheen holding about 37% of the vote to Maura Sullivan’s 35% with 88% counted. Shaheen will face Trump-endorsed Republican Anthony DiLorenzo in November for the seat being vacated by Rep. Chris Pappas, who won Tuesday’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. The district could become an important battleground in the fight for control of the House.

The U.S.-Iran conflict has sharply escalated after American forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers, including four in the Gulf of Oman and another near Iran’s critical Kharg Island oil hub. U.S. Central Command says the strikes were retaliation after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard twice launched ballistic missiles at a U.S. Navy warship over the past two days. The American ship escaped both attacks and no U.S. personnel were hurt. Iran then retaliated with a major ballistic-missile attack targeting U.S. forces in Jordan, while additional attacks were reported against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The rapidly escalating confrontation is again raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

President Donald Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff say another round of Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations could be announced soon after an extraordinary diplomatic mission that took them from Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin directly to talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. The envoys say their discussions with both sides produced “new ideas” and renewed momentum toward negotiations, while Zelenskyy says Ukraine is prepared to participate in trilateral talks involving Russia and the United States. Despite the renewed diplomatic push, no breakthrough has been announced and major disagreements over territory and Ukraine’s future security remain unresolved.

Dozens of migrants attempted to board heavily overcrowded inflatable boats along the northern French coast Sunday morning in another effort to cross the English Channel into Britain. Video from the scene shows people wading into the water and climbing aboard packed dinghies as French police watched from the beach and patrol boats moved offshore, with a speedboat attempting to prevent the vessels from departing. The incident comes amid intensified French and British efforts to stop the dangerous crossings. While crossings have declined this year, the number of people being packed into individual boats has continued to rise.

One of Indonesia’s most dangerous volcanoes is erupting for a second straight day, sending towering clouds of ash across western Indonesia and causing massive air-travel disruptions. Mount Anak Krakatau began erupting late Friday and recorded additional eruptions Sunday, with ash reaching as high as 50,000 feet. Authorities have closed or suspended operations at multiple airports, including Jakarta’s main international hub. More than 1,500 flights and roughly 170,000 passengers have now been affected. Officials say there are currently no reported casualties and no imminent tsunami threat, but the volcano remains at a heightened alert level.

The FBI is investigating what could become one of the largest exposures of government-issued identification documents ever reported. A dark-web service called Nexus claimed to possess more than 153 million digital scans of U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses, along with millions of other identification records. Investigative journalist Brian Krebs examined the database and verified multiple records, including his own. Evidence points toward data handled by Louisiana-based identity-verification company IDScan. net, which says an unauthorized third party may have accessed or copied customer information from its cloud. The full scope remains under investigation.

A bizarre scene in Chicago is going viral after more than a dozen autonomous food-delivery robots became bunched together on a Lincoln Park sidewalk, creating what looked like a miniature robot traffic jam. Video recorded by local runner Becca Ostien shows the Coco delivery robots clustered along North Clark Street, leaving pedestrians to maneuver around them. Coco says a deployment error caused several robots to reroute at the same time and that the problem was corrected within minutes. But the incident is adding fuel to an already-growing debate over whether delivery robots belong on crowded city sidewalks.

President Donald Trump is making another emergency appeal to the Supreme Court in an effort to implement new restrictions on mail-in voting before the November midterms. The move comes after a federal judge blocked the administration’s plan Friday, warning that implementing sweeping changes now could disenfranchise millions of voters. The clock is rapidly running out: North Carolina has already begun mailing ballots, Wisconsin communities have started sending theirs, and other states will follow soon. The administration argues the new requirements would strengthen election security, while opponents say they are unconstitutional and nearly impossible to implement this close to Election Day.
