Seniors were honored at the women's basketball team's final game of the season, today against St. Mary's. While St. Mary's took the game, 70-54, there was much to celebrate, with four seniors honored, the OC Athletic Band, the Olivet College Drumline and Olivet College Dance team, closing a season which called Upton gym home.

It was senior night and red-out night at the last men's home basketball game during regular season. The Adrian Bulldogs came away with the win, 85-76, but tonight's crowd kept cheering and chanting until the final buzzer. Men's seniors are Jackson Patton, Keyon Rainey, Ryan Franklin, Nathaniel Colon and Deondre Dobbins.

The men's swimming & diving team won 14-of-15 events to beat Bethel (Ind.), 150-82, on Senior Day at the Upton Center Pool. Highlighting the meet was the team of Eric Wood, Jacob Ritter, Takato Timmerman and Zach Meharg breaking the pool record in the 800 free relay.

The Comet wrestling team hosted a dual match tonight and won against Adrian. The event was a fund-raiser for the Ronald McDonald House of West Michigan.
At intermission, Olivet recognized student-athletes who earned All-MIAA honors during the 2019 fall season, as well as the 2018-19 women's volleyball team for having one of the top team GPAs in the MIAA.

The Olivet College Wind Ensemble placed to an audience of about 100 parents and supporters this afternoon in the Olivet Congregational Church.
The hour-long concert gave listeners a preview of what the ensemble will be playing in Rome, Italy, in a New Year's Day parade there.
In just about six weeks, said Director of Bands Jeremy Duby (photo at right), the group will make its second trip abroad (the first was to Paris, France) by invitation, to perform and visit various locations.

The event, held at the Olivet Congregational Church, attracted dozens of students, employees, parents and community members to hear an hour filled with a variety of musical selections, from Handel to "My Favorite Things".

Last Wednesday, about 30 students, staff and faculty traveled to the state capitol to hold a rally in support of the reinstatement of the Michigan Tuition Grant to the proposed state budged.
In addition, students attended the Oct. 16 Michigan House of Representatives session to demonstrate their support of House Bill 5076, designed to reinstate the Michigan Tuition Grant.
The grant is currently awarded to about 570 Olivet students, in the amount of $2,400, according to college sources.

Echo reporter Aaron Goudie caught the fall of a giant oak today on the campus of Olivet College. Workers estimated the tree, located in the campus square, to be about 375 years old. It was in danger of falling in threatening weather, so the campus removed it on Fall Break Day, when classes are not in session.

And so it begins...the Olivet College Homecoming Fair is taking shape. Rides and trailers rolled in beginning at dusk Tuesday and continued into the night. Students painted scenes on the Kirk Center windows to decorate for the week. Tonight is the annual Midnight Breakfast at the Kirk Center as well.
Festival grounds open Friday, 3 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Food, games, entertainment and more will be featured.

The current attack on journalism has invigorated my drive for it all over again. I ultimately got out of journalism because I felt it was all becoming "opinion". But seeing it under attack really makes me want to go out and report the TRUTH. I hope all the current journalism students have the drive that I felt in 2001, which is the same drive I feel right now. Good luck students.
