There are couple ways to get a message across- just kind of put it out there and hope it resonates, scream it into someone’s face and just expect them to follow along (cough, 47, cough), or throw a party and bring everyone along. It’s that third method that Portland’s utilizes to share culture and create a connection…and they do it well. 1876 are to indigenous what is to riot grrl…like “girls to the front,” it’s “Braids in the Pit.” With their unique style of there’s no way you won’t find yourself dancing your ass off, while chanting and singing along. I recently had a dream. It was a pretty solid dream, as far as dreams go these days. I was at a punk show and was like the Blind Shake or the Metz were playing…both bands that make me want to dance naked in front of a window while screaming “FUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOU” to the world, and one can only imagine how that would go if both the bands merged, but what was wild was the fact that Paul Weller was on vocals, making for some stirring, inspiring energy. Now here’s the kicker…when I woke up, I realized I wasn’t dreaming- I had seen the night before and goddam were they good!! So the whole Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan thing was something else…America’s sweetheart on the ice brought down by some trailer park trash…but you know what- Tonya Harding would’ve been way more fun to go to a show with. I’ll bet she’d rise and fall, flail and weave through the pit with style and grace. Never falling, always rising- and she’d probably give you a hit of that joint between bands along with a high five.
