Everyone who rides a ferry, both those who ride them regularly or just occasionally, should be interested in this one. The WA Transportation Commission has been hearing public input through July on its current ferry fare proposal, which would raise rates an average 3% in 2025 and again in 2026, and increase summer “peak” season surcharges to 35% for all routes, matching what is currently charged for San Juan routes. At this meeting, commissioners are scheduled to take a final vote on the proposal. Already earlier this year state lawmakers voted to raise the capital surcharge from 50 cents to $1 per ticket and put a new 3% fee on credit card transactions. Washington state’s ferry system is the largest in the U.S. and third largest in the world. 20+ million people ride the boats each year. Fares cover 57% of the operational costs for the ferry system.

Since its creation by the 2021 Legislature, the commission has met regularly on its quest to establish universal health care for all residents of Washington. This meeting is different than most commission meetings: it’s a moderated discussion in which advocacy groups share their visions for universal health care – groups like Health Care for All, Health Care is a Human Right, the Washington Community Action Network, and Whole Washington. After these groups present, there will be a Q+A with commission members, who are governor appointees, state legislators, reps from health-related state agencies and others.
