STORM REPORTS: We had a pretty significant wind event roll through far eastern Nebraska into western Iowa.

Reports of 60-70 mph winds were common from Cass County, NE, to Cass County, IA. We have received reports of tree damage and power outages in Plattsmouth, Glenwood, Malvern, and Carson.

Did you have damage in your neighborhood? Send us a report in the comments or messages.

9:00 pm - UPDATE: We have numerous strong to severe storms in the Lincoln vicinity. These storms are not moving fast, but they are packing 1-1.5" hail and 60-75 mph winds.

The closest storms to the metro are in the Cass/Otoe county line, and one approaching Ashland. Again, these are slow moving, but creeping closer to the metro.

Severe watch is in effect until 12 am, so if these storms make it, some hail/gusty winds are certainly possible in the metro. Or, these storms may fall apart before they reach the area.

Another note, these storms are producing TREMENDOUS rain. Reports of 2-4" of rain in some storms southwest of Lincoln, so a flash flood threat is certainly on the table, particularly for the waterlogged areas of southeast Nebraska.

5:45 pm - Good evening! Let's talk about the storm chances tonight.

First up, we have a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH in effect for Omaha and points south until 12 am.

UP TO 8 PM - Watching some bubbling cumulus clouds along the US-136 corridor. These may try to build into 1-2 storms over the next couple of hours. If a storm can form, it could become severe. This will stay SOUTH of Omaha.

AFTER 8 PM - Storms become more likely along/south of I-80. These will last through the night in some areas. The severe risk will be greatest in the early hours (8 pm - 12 am). Storms could be capable of producing large hail (2-3"), damaging winds (60-70 mph), and perhaps a tornado (low risk).

OVERNIGHT - Though many of us could see storms, I expect storms to form into a narrow east-west line through the area after a few hours. Where this happens will be crucial to the flood risk tonight. Models are honing in on the US-34 corridor (Red Oak/Plattsmouth/Lincoln/David City) for this heaviest corridor to set up. However, a shift of just 20 miles each way can make all the difference (this means the Omaha metro is still in play). Within this band, we could see 2-4" of rain. Given that many neighborhoods south of Omaha are saturated from Thursday's storms, we could easily see a localized flash flood threat develop. I expect this to be the main threat after midnight, depending on where the band will be.

SATURDAY - Storms fizzle out by sunrise, and we dry out into Saturday. A few storms may develop in the heat of the afternoon on Saturday, but these will be scattered.

9:35 pm - a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued for the counties in yellow (including Omaha) until 3 am.

Not everyone will see storms, but we have a storm over the metro now, and others are popping up over northeast Nebraska. The severe risk is not too high, but any storm that can sustain itself may produce some large hail & gusty winds.

The tornado threat is very very low.

8:50 pm - We have one thunderstorm that has developed along the Platte River west of Omaha. It's not severe, but it is developing in an environment favorable for some stronger storms.

Heavy rain & lightning heading into the northwest metro, but some small hail or gusty winds cannot be ruled out if this storm strengthens further.

SUMMERLIKE WEATHER: June 1 is the start of meteorological summer, and it will feel like it!

Highs look to be in the 80s all week with lows in the 60s.

Sadly, it also means the humidity will be present too.

We are also looking at a daily chance of storms. There will be a LOT of dry time. The best chance for some storms will be Thursday & Friday afternoon/evening/night, with chances continuing into the weekend.

Exactly when your neighborhood may see a storm is uncertain since this type of pattern favors more "disorganized" storms. With that being said, given the time of year, some of these storms may carry a severe threat, but any further details are TBD.

STORMS TONIGHT: While most of us will spend the evening warm and dry, a few storms will develop after 8 pm.

The chance of your neighborhood seeing a storm is low. However, if you do see one, it could be strong with some hail.

This risk tapers off after midnight.

9:50 pm - Outside of the storm over Omaha, our attention is turning southwest of the metro to this band of storms moving in.

The line of storms over Kansas is breaking apart, but it's pushing through a boundary that has been sparking more storms along it.
This will continue as they approach Omaha after 11 pm.

The spotty nature of these storms means that not everyone will see one. The severe ingredients are not there for any organized severe weather. However, the stronger storms may produce some 50-60 mph winds and small hail alongside heavy rain & lightning.

9:25 pm - We have a couple of storms that just popped up over the metro. We had some small hail at the station (108th and Mockingbird). Not severe, but some heavy rain, lightning, and small hail are possible as they lift north.

From the freezer aisle to the radio dial, 1953 may be the most culturally important year in Omaha's history. Read more at the link in the comments.
