A car accident ended Ross Glenn's career as an electrician. It also started ProTech.

Nineteen years into the trade, a neck injury made the work unsustainable. Ross and Trish Glenn started over out of his father's backroom garage in 2004 — Ross the only paid employee, Trish keeping the books from home.

Twenty-plus years later, ProTech Commercial Vehicle Outfitters runs two locations, outfits everything from half-ton pickups to Class 8 dump trucks, and is run alongside the two sons who grew up on the shop floor.

She moved to Omaha in 2022 and didn't know a soul.

She kept going to book clubs and reading meetups around the metro, and kept running into the same problem — the chairs were uncomfortable, or you couldn't bring a drink, or the room just felt wrong.

So Samantha Morley opened her own.

One year ago this month, The Reading Room opened at 1505 Farnam in a 1929 building where the original shoe store's name is still inlaid in the terrazzo at the front door. Since then, it's become one of downtown's busiest third spaces...open mic poetry that draws writers from as far as Lincoln, a local author who finished an entire novel from the same barstool, and an 80-year-old regular named Jim who comes in every Tuesday because he wanted somewhere to be that wasn't his house.
