For Bobby:

Some people reach a status where they feel invincible. So legendary, so woven into the fabric of culture and memory, that you subconsciously believe they’ll always be there. Bob Weir lived in that space for me. Which is why the news of his passing feels surreal. Not shocking — just hard to reconcile. Because even though Father Time is undefeated, Bobby felt like someone who had a chance for the upset.

His light had a way of pushing back the darkness. Or reminding you that no matter how heavy things felt, good times — and greatness — were still ahead. Losing that light during a moment when the world is already shrouded in darkness, it hits harder than most.
—- And yet, almost immediately, I’m reminded that his light never belonged to just one moment or one lifetime. It lives on through the music — thousands of recordings spanning more than sixty years with the Grateful Dead, RatDog, Dead & Co, and the many other winding roads he traveled beyond that.

To me, the Dead were never just a band. They were a beautiful collision of individuals — each bringing a specific ingredient to a recipe that somehow became one of the most complex, diverse, and influential forces in not just American music, but global culture. Some would even argue they went beyond this world entirely — into space, time, and other dimensions. And honestly, I wouldn’t disagree. Whether that feeling came from a ‘mindset,’ the music, or magic is beside the point. From their earliest days through every evolution, lineup change, and side project, it felt like the Grateful Dead were always destined for something bigger than themselves.

Each member played a role. Phil was the brain. Jerry was the soul. Mickey and Billy were the rhythm. Pigpen and Brent brought the flair. But in my mind, Bobby was, is, and always will be the heart and spirit of it all. Not just because of his unorthodox rhythm guitar style or his unmistakable voice, but because of the playful energy, positivity, humility, and humanity he carried into everything he did. Whether onstage, in interviews, through humanitarian work, or simply being present in a moment — you could feel that heart. And it was big. Bigger than most. And he wasn’t afraid to wear it openly and share it with anyone, anywhere.

I was lucky enough to experience that firsthand in 2002, working security at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska, when RatDog came through town. Around that time, I had just lost a friend — someone I shared a bond through music, but most notably, The Dead. That night, Bobby & crew opened the show with a ripping Shakedown Street — one of the songs we had in heavy rotation. Later came One More Saturday Night, another favorite we shared. Song after song felt intentional, almost cosmic — like the universe was letting me know this night was bigger than I’d anticipated. Needless to say, I “secured” the dance floor that night and didn’t move until I made some rounds during set break and before encore…

After said encore, which absolutely tore the roof off with Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad, I found my moment to express my gratitude to Mr. Weir. Even though backstage was closed, I made my way in and waited patiently while Bobby decompressed —pretending to take out the same garbage like 2 or 3 times 😅 When he was finally alone, I took the shot — not for anything big, just to say hello and thank him for the music.

But standing there, something opened up. I told him how Shakedown Street hit differently that night. How my friend had just passed. How those songs connected us. How it felt like the set was being played for us. Bobby listened — fully. No rush. No pretense. I wasn’t starstruck or nervous. It felt like talking to an old friend. His presence was warm, welcoming — that heart I mentioned earlier was unmistakable.

Then he did something I will carry with me forever.

He put a hand on my shoulder and asked my friend’s name. I told him. He raised his other hand to the sky, closed his eyes, then looked towards the heavens and spoke my friend’s name aloud praising him with all of his energy — then holding that moment in silence far longer than anyone needed to. Long enough to matter. Long enough for it to move straight through me. I felt his energy rush through my body — love, empathy, something bigger than words.

When he opened his eyes, he told me my friend’s energy would always be with me. That his light would not fade away.

Then he motioned to his crew. Someone brought over a blue duffle bag. Bobby unzipped it, pulled out a bottle, uncapped it, and said, “Cheers to your friend.” He took a long pull and handed it to me. I did the same. He hugged me — a hug I can still feel to this day. We laughed. We talked a bit more. I thanked him again, then I stepped away, knowing I’d just experienced something more spiritual than I ever had in church, relationships, or anywhere else.

That was Bobby.

His heart was unlike anyone else’s. And he gave it freely — to the music, to the moment, and to the people around him. That’s why this loss feels so heavy. Because there will never be another quite like him. But when I return to that memory — to what he showed me that night — I remember the lesson: our light never stops shining. And Bobby’s will shine brighter than most. It carries on through the music, the stories, the interviews, the presence he shared so generously while he was here.

Bob Weir was bigger than life. Not just the heart of a band, but the heart of a scene — one that will continue to pulse for generations. And if there’s one thing he taught me, it’s that we carry that light with us now. We share it. We spread it. We dance. We keep moving.

So yes, it’s time to mourn.
But if Bobby had his way, he’d tell us not to linger too long — turn the volume up, hold each other close, be kind and enjoy the ride.

And what a ride it has been, but we must keep on truckin’.

Thank you, Bobby and fare thee well ✌️

“There may come a day, I will dance on your grave… but at least I’m enjoying the ride”
