JOINT STATEMENT FROM OMAHA MAYOR JOHN W. EWING JR. and OMAHA POLICE CHIEF TODD SCHMADERER
Omaha is a safe city with low homicide and violent crime rates. But today is a profoundly sad and difficult one. In the span of a single day, our city has lost six individuals: four to apparent murder-suicides, one to a shooting and one to a fire. All are under investigation and weβll share more information when we have it.
Violence affects families and communities, and we grieve alongside all who experienced the shock of what occurred today. We want to let you - and others in crisis know - that Omaha cares for you. We will share resources below.
While the Omaha Police Department is still in the early investigative stages of these tragedies, our community can rest assured that our officers and professional staff are working tirelessly. OPD is committed to diligently investigating these cases with the utmost urgency, as we are with all criminal acts in our city.
Until today, our city of nearly half a million people had lost four to homicide. This time last year, there were nine homicides. Today, we added three names to that list bringing total homicides to seven. One loss is too many.
