A proposed merger, currently awaiting approval by regulators, would fold Norfolk Southern into the Union Pacific Railroad rail network, extending UP’s reach from the Mississippi River to the eastern seaboard to create the nation’s first transcontinental railroad.

Eric Gehringer, executive vice president of operations, said for all the business advantages and commercial benefits the proposed merger provides, there’s also a huge measure of pride and satisfaction the company feels at being at the center of such an achievement, given UP’s role in the history of American rail thus far.

The Potash Twins’ personalities have taken them from Westside Concert Jazz Band to the Food Network, Bravo TV, and the Travel Channel, where they’ve hosted multiple television shows.

Now, the twins have a new candy company called Sweet Stash in collaboration with actor Martin Starr, another promising venture for the ambitious duo.

“Our candy company is taking off like crazy and that’s what we’re doing a lot of the time now,” Adeev Potash said. “A lot of it goes to a good cause. Music funding is getting cut left and right, so we were like, ‘What can we do that’s in our control to actually help counteract that?’ Sweet Stash was born out of an obsession of candy and gummies, and a love for giving back to the arts.”

Walk into Piezon's Pizzeria on Center Road in Omaha, and everything is almost exactly the way Matt Vrzal left it. Almost.

Vrzal’s friend and manager Alex Narducci is still behind the counter keeping Piezon’s standards high.

The only missing ingredient is Vrzal—the heart and soul of the place—who was taken too soon at 51 years old when he died suddenly in September 2025. The Skutt Catholic High School assistant football coach and restaurateur isn’t here anymore, but somehow, unmistakably, this place—and all he built it to be—still is.

Vrzal no doubt left big shoes to fill, but his family was unanimous in their decision. His mom, his sister, her husband, and his two nephews were all unwavering: Piezon’s must carry on.

“Isla del mar” means “island of the sea” in Spanish, so it’s an apt reflection of Isla del Mar’s specialty: authentic Mexican seafood. However, owner and founder Ismara Gonzalez said, the restaurant’s offerings are quite diverse.

The extensive menu has been successful. Since its 2017 start, the company has already grown to three locations. In 2024, two franchises, La Michoacana Plus (featuring ice cream) and Con Azúcar Café (featuring coffee), joined the Isla Del Mar West location. And there’s more ahead!

And later this month, Ismara Gonzalez is introducing La Chime to Omaha! La Chime serves ice cream, bread, and boba with a Sinaloan twist.

Julie Cornell KETV has spent decades using her platform to share current events, human-interest stories, and connect with her neighbors in Omaha. But she’s also used it to ensure that everyone has enough to eat.

Cornell turned her passion for sharing nutritious, hearty meals into activism by diving into the creation of a new cookbook, this time benefiting Food Bank for the Heartland. The digital tome, Home Cooking from the Heartland, contains 37 carefully curated recipes for budget-friendly, nutritious meals that families can make and enjoy together.

You may not know Cedric Hartman, but chances are he’s been in either your parents’ or grandparents’ home.

Hartman’s often-imitated reading and floor lamps have an unmistakable design: a clean, metallic triangular wedge directs the light to its intended target. The lamps are iconic enough to be included in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, despite Hartman considering them merely “rough drafts.”

At age 97, Hartman is still coming up with designs, both for new lamps and pieces of furniture. Five of his tables are in the recently opened main branch of the Omaha Library on 72nd and Dodge.

After not receiving a single nomination in the first 18 years of the James Beard Awards, the city has garnered 29 in the last 18 years, including two finalist nods. Omaha’s culinary footprint continues to grow, and the nation is taking notice.

In 2026, Omaha’s David Utterback of Yosh*tomo—and previously Ota and Koji—was nominated for Best Chef: Midwest, as was Lincoln’s Zach Midgett of Casa Bovina. Le Bouillon was also a semifinalist for Outstanding Wine & Other Beverages Program.

In February, Johnny’s Cafe was also named a James Beard America’s Classics restaurant.

Tim Nicholson, the executive chef at The Boiler Room, and Utterback were finalists in 2024 and 2025, respectively. And while they haven’t brought home any hardware yet, Paul Kulik, a nominee in 2012 for his work at The Boiler Room, said simply being at the awards ceremony is a massive accomplishment that Omaha should be very proud of.

A large zero-entry wet room with multiple shower heads and a soaking tub was at the very top of this client’s priority list when they contacted Lisa Anderson Design & Planning to redesign their primary bathroom. Their home, built in 2004, is nestled on a quiet, wooded acreage that immediately evokes a feeling of peaceful serenity, and they wanted their bathroom to reflect that as well. They desired to age in place, increase storage, and improve the lighting while creating a clean-lined, timelessly traditional space.
