Our cause will not be to crusade, but to act as a means of furthering the people's right to know. As our name implies, we are an independent newspaper — not in the sense that we will skirt controversy, but in the sense that we will not align ourselves with any political party or faction within the county or community. It is our desire to stand alone and apart in an attempt to be as objective in our reporting as possible. — June 13, 1976.

FRIDAY WEATHER: 🌦 There’s a chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

Sunrise/Sunset: 6:27/8:59
Normal Temps: 86°/64° (Records: 93° in 1990, 48° in 1963)
Year-To-Date Rainfall: 35.5" (Normal: 32.8")

🌩️ DETAILS: Rain chances diminish a bit today. There’s a 50% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon; otherwise, we’ll see mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of about 86°, dropping to around 67° tonight. Any remnant thunderstorms will diminish quickly once we get close to sunset.

🌦️ THE REST OF THE WEEKEND: There’ll be about a 50/50 chance of thunderstorms again tomorrow, with a high temperature of around 87°. Thunderstorms will become likely Sunday afternoon, with a high temperature sneaking closer to 90°.

🌩️NEXT WEEK: Thunderstorms will remain likely on Monday, then rain chances will diminish a bit as we move further into the week. It’ll be typical summer weather: a daily chance of afternoon thunderstorms, with steamy temperatures. We will be close to 90° to start the week, though temperatures should back off somewhat later in the week.

🛶 RIVER CONDITIONS: Streamflows are close to normal for this time of year — about 200 cubic feet per second (cfs) at Leatherwood Ford (Big South Fork) and a little less than 40 cfs at Burnt Mill Ford (Clear Fork). Stream clarity was near optimal yesterday afternoon, with water temperature about 84°. Water temperatures were a bit slower to climb yesterday due to slightly cooler temperatures caused by cloud cover. The streamflow at Burnt Mill was beginning to tick up slightly due to some thunderstorm activity further upstream.

THURSDAY WEATHER: ⛈️ Thunderstorms remain likely.

Sunrise/Sunset: 6:27/8:59

Normal Temps: 85°/64° (Records: 93° in 1980, 48° in 1961)

Year-To-Date Rainfall: 35.4" (Normal: 32.6")

☔️ DETAILS: This “rainy pattern” has thus far been a bust — very little rain to speak of Tuesday and Wednesday, and now rain chances are shrinking for the days ahead. But thunderstorms will still be likely today. There’s a 70% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. As has been the case the past couple of days, it’ll be difficult to project very far in advance when and where the storms will occur, except that they will start to develop primarily during the afternoon hours and begin to die down quickly after we lose peak heating. Otherwise, we’ll see partly sunny skies today, with a high of about 83°.

🌦️ THE WEEKEND: There’s a 40% chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms Friday and Saturday with temperatures in the mid 80s each day. The weather will be about as typical as you can get for summer in these parts! Otherwise, we’ll see mostly sunny skies. Sunday may bring a little better coverage of thunderstorms.

🌦️NEXT WEEK: Daily thunderstorm chances will be with us throughout next week, better some days than others. Typical summer weather will continue. We should see the heat slack off a bit towards the end of next week.

🛶 RIVER CONDITIONS: Streamflows are close to normal for this time of year — just above 200 cubic feet per second (cfs) at Leatherwood Ford (Big South Fork) and a little less than 40 cfs at Burnt Mill Ford (Clear Fork). Stream clarity is optimal, and afternoon water temperatures are about 85° — perfect conditions for visiting your favorite swimming hole. We’ll likely see similar conditions persist into the weekend, unless we see significant thunderstorm development in the headwater areas of Fentress and Anderson counties.

LOSING DAYLIGHT: Today is our last post-9 p.m. sunset of the year.

The difference in today's sunset and tomorrow's sunset is very slight, almost unnoticeable: 9:00:06 tonight, and 8:59:46 tomorrow — a difference of only 20 seconds. But it's a sign of our shortening days and lengthening nights, a trend that will continue all the way through fall. By July 31, the sun will set at 8:46:14 — about 14 minutes earlier than tonight. And by August 31, it'll set at 8:08:43.
