WEDNESDAY WEATHER: ☀️ Our beautiful stretch of weather continues today, and will be almost identical to yesterday — lots of sun, temperatures topping out around 79°, and a calm wind. Tonight, we’ll drop to about 54° under clear skies. Our warming trend continues tomorrow, as we push all the way to about 83° with sunny skies and a calm wind.

☀️THE WEEKEND: For the most part, it looks like we’ll be dry and warm this weekend. Friday will be sunny and 84°, and Saturday will be about the same. We’ll see a 30% chance of thunderstorms work into the forecast on Sunday.

FURTHER OUT: Next week will see our warm weather continue, with temperatures in the 80s and chances of afternoon thunderstorms on a daily basis — pretty typical summer weather. We may see more rain in our area as we head into the second half of June.

💧 RIVER CONDITIONS: Above-normal streamflows continue. The Big South Fork River is flowing about 1,200 cubic feet per second (cfs), while Clear Fork is flowing about 500 cfs. Both of those readings are well above the 75th percentile for this time of year. Water clarity is poor but improving. Water temperatures will top out around 80° this afternoon. For paddlers, the National Park Service maintains a description of river levels here: https://www.nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/riverlevels.htm

There are plenty of stories about men who've tried their best to avoid jail, but amid a stretch of bitterly cold weather in January 1911, a Scott County man who had been ordered released by the court found a way to get back into his cell and then refused to leave because of the cold!

TUESDAY WEATHER: ☀️ A stretch of dry, sunny weather begins today. We’ll top out around 78 degrees today, then gradually warm through the rest of the week — reaching the mid 80s by Friday. Nighttime lows will drop into the low 50s tonight, but they’ll gradually warm to around 60 degrees by the end of the week.

☀️ THE REST OF THE WEEK: A rather dry air mass, for summer, will settle in for the remainder of this week. We’ll see lots of sunshine and temperatures in the upper 70s each day for the rest of the week. Nighttime lows will generally be in the low to mid 50s.

☀️THE WEEKEND: For the most part, it looks like we’ll be mostly dry this weekend. There’ll be a slight chance of thunderstorms by Saturday night and again on Sunday. Otherwise, it’ll be mostly sunny with temperatures in the mid 80s.

FURTHER OUT: Next week looks hot, with daily chances of rain and thunderstorms — a pretty typical summer pattern. The heat may back off a bit as we head into the middle of June, and our rain chances may increase.

💧 RIVER CONDITIONS: Streamflows are much above normal for this time of year, due to those weekend thunderstorms to our south. The Big South Fork River is flowing at about 1,500 cubic feet per second (cfs). Upstream, Clear Fork is still flowing about 500 cfs. Water temperatures topped out near 68 degrees yesterday. Water clarity is poor. For paddlers, the National Park Service maintains a description of river levels here: https://www.nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/riverlevels.htm

MONDAY WEATHER: 🌦️ There’s about a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms today. Otherwise, we’ll be partly sunny with a high of about 80 degrees. As of this writing, indications are that any rainfall we see today will be very light, with the better dynamics for some strong afternoon thunderstorms diving to our south. However, this is subject to change.

☀️ THE REST OF THE WEEK: A rather dry air mass, for summer, will settle in for the remainder of this week. We’ll see lots of sunshine and temperatures in the upper 70s each day for the rest of the week. Nighttime lows will generally be in the low to mid 50s.

THE WEEKEND: Moisture will begin to return to the atmosphere on Friday, driving up temperatures and also increasing humidity levels. It looks like we’ll be dry Friday, with just a slight chance of thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. It’ll be warm, with temperatures in the mid 80s.

The Big South Fork River is flowing at about 3,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), which is near a daily record for this date after spiking to over 13,000 cfs on Saturday. Upstream, Clear Fork is still flowing above 500 cfs. Water temperatures topped out near 68 degrees yesterday. Water clarity is poor. WEATHER: Non-severe thunderstorms have formed over the western part of the northern plateau. These will push into Scott County shortly.

05/31/2026

WEATHER: Hit-or-miss showers and thunderstorms will become possible early tomorrow evening (around 5 p.m. or so), and remain a threat throughout the night and into Monday. Current indications are that the "have-nots" will be far greater than the "haves" with this round of potential rainfall. After that, dry weather will dominate next week.

Lacey Strunk shared these photos of New River from the Winona bridge. New River is nearing its crest at 11,500 cfs (as measured at New River Bridge).

05/30/2026

UPDATE: New River has topped 10,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) at the U.S. Highway 27 bridge and continues to climb rapidly. The river has risen more than 10 feet in the past 11 hours, and has long since shattered the record streamflow for this date (which was 3,000 cfs, set back in 1973). Further downstream, the Big South Fork River has reached 5,000 cfs and is still climbing rapidly. There, the river has risen five feet in the last six hours.

This is due to significant rainfall that fell in the New River headwater areas of extreme southern Scott County, northwestern Anderson County, and northeastern Morgan County during the predawn hours. As noted in a post yesterday afternoon, this flooding rainfall was highly localized. Just a few miles away in the Clear Fork headwater areas of northwestern Morgan County and eastern Fentress County, much less rain was received. Clear Fork crested at about 800 cfs this morning at Burnt Mill Ford near Robbins, and is currently flowing at just over 400 cfs (it'll rise some the remainder of the day due to the steadier, more moderate rains from later in the morning just beginning to reach the gauge).
