Freda Kay Joseph, 69, of Stanton, widow of James Lee Joseph, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2025 at her home. She was born February 13, 1956 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky to the late Lauza and Bessie Stacy Smith. Freda was a member of the Bowen Full Gospel Pentecostal Church of God. Survivors include, brother, Roscoe (Jeanne) Smith, Burlington, IN; sisters, Omeda Smith and Wanda Fae (Pat) Johnson, both of Stanton; sisters-in-law, Clara Smith and Kathy Smith; very dear friend, Connie Cecil; and a host of nieces and nephews. Martha Faulkner, 96, of Stanton, widow of Gilbert Faulkner, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born March 17, 1929 in Stanton to the late George Washington and Margie Marie Cheek Drake. Martha was fondly known as the Mum Lady, she enjoyed sharing her mums with the community for over 34 years. She was a member of the Bowen Church of God. Martha was the very definition of living life to the fullest, with a spark in her eye and a fiesty spirit she enbraced every single day as a new adventure. Survivors include, daughters, Thelma (Mike) Skidmore of Stanton, Vickie Faulkner of Jeffersonville; son, Daryl (Shari) Faulkner of Stanton; sisters-in-law, Jesse Drake and Rachel Drake; grandchildren, Mike (Jamie)Skidmore, Alyssa (Keith) Boley, Justin (Kayla) Faulkner, Jeremy (Natalie) Faulkner, Danielle (Scott) Jolman, Brittany (Christian) King, and Josh (Andrea) Matthews; and 29 great grandchildren. Joanne Roberta De Filippo, age 92, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Windsor Care Center in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. She was born in Carthage, New York, on July 15, 1933, to the late Robert Lasher and the late Madeline Rourke Lasher. Joanne was a dedicated professional secretary whose career began at the City of Rye in New York. Following her retirement, she embraced a new chapter in Stanton, Kentucky, where she continued to utilize her skills as a secretary at Emmanuel Baptist Church for many years. Joanne was deeply committed to her faith; she actively participated in church life, where she played a vital role in teaching Sunday School classes and was involved in the Upward Basketball program. Joanne, known as Gram by her beloved grandchildren and Gigi by many others, was a strong source of support and love. Her friendly smile and caring nature made everyone feel safe and valued. Joanne brought joy to everyday moments; she was not just a grandmother, but a trusted friend and a guiding influence in the lives of her family and friends. Outside of her professional and church commitments, Joanne found joy in sewing and quilting, expressing her creativity and passion through beautiful handcrafted pieces. Her warm and outgoing personality naturally attracted a wide circle of friends, with whom she loved sharing meals and creating cherished memories. Joanne had a particular fondness for animals, especially her beloved dogs, which brought her immense joy and companionship. A long-time supporter of Friends of Powell County Pets, she exhibited her compassion not just for her own pets but for all animals in need. Joanne truly embodied the spirit of Christ's love, and her vibrant presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Joanne is survived by two sons: Thomas G. (Laurie) De Filippo of Stanton, and James Robert (Linda) De Filippo of Stamford, Connecticut; one daughter: Caryn L. Stanley Slemp, 75, of Camargo, widower of Anna Faye Slemp, passed away Monday, September 15, 2025 at the UK Bluegrass Hospice Center, Lexington. He was born March 26, 1950 in Stanton, Kentucky to the late Luther and Mamie Pridemore Slemp. Stanley worked at Hobarts, Sipple Brick, and had his own construction, masonary business for over three decades. His craft took him all over the country and much of the work he built still stands proudly today, as a testimate to his legacy. He had a real love for the outdoors, hunting and fishing, especially catching bass with his buddies down the road. Stanley made pop-eyes, fishing plugs, bee hives, and many other items to keep himself busy. His biggest passion was trading knives and guns. He would go to local pawn shops and flea markets every week, where he had many friends he considered family. Stanley never met a stranger, he had friends far and wide. His famous saying he loved to tell everyone is "Stanley takes care of Stanley", he was independent and did things "his" way, no matter what anyone thought, or what they thought was best for him. He was well known for his gardens and he always enjoyed sharing his harvest with others. Stanley always wanted to be prepared for the future canning fruits and vegetables to put up. He took great pride in his gardens and watching them grow. He cherished his time with family and friends, always enjoying every moment he could spend with them. Stanley had a fondess of his rose colored glasses and loved listening to music. He also enjoyed attending the Gateway Church of God , where he formed many friendships there as well. Survivors include, son, Eric (Debbie) Slemp, Mt. Shirley G. Crabtree, age 85, husband of Donna Sue Crabtree, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He was born in Bowen, Kentucky, on March 17, 1940, to the late Rodney Clayton Crabtree and the late Ibbie Hughes Crabtree. Shirley dedicated his career as a refrigeration specialist at A&P Company, where he honed his technical skills and developed a reputation for reliability. A proud member of the Stanton Masonic Lodge #352 since 1963, he also contributed to the community as a member of the National Turkey Foundation and the Northfork Bow Hunters Club. His weekends were often spent immersed in the great outdoors, where he found joy in hunting deer and turkeys and honing his aim in trap shooting. On the weekends, he could often be found by the banks of the Red River, where he found solace in fishing or enjoying leisurely rounds of golf, which allowed him to engage in friendly competition with friends. Shirley had a deep-rooted passion for agriculture and took great pride in cultivating to***co. Along with his wife, they nurtured several vegetable gardens that thrived under their care. Shirley played a key role in building the baseball field at Bowen and cherished many seasons of coaching kids while supporting Powell County Baseball. His remarkable carpentry skills were evident in the many houses he helped build over the years, showcasing both his craftsmanship and dedication to his craft. Known for his easygoing nature, Shirley approached life with a relaxed demeanor that put everyone at ease. His kind heart led him to extend a helping hand to those in need, always seeking to uplift others. Above all, Shirley cherished his family, holding a special place in his heart for his beloved wife of 67 years, to whom he remained fiercely loyal and devoted, affirming their bond every day. He was also a very devoted son to his loving parents. In addition to his parents, Shirley was preceded in death by one son: Donnie Gay Crabtree; and one brother: Billy Ray Crabtree. She was born August 23, 1960, in Hamilton, Ohio and was the daughter of Louise Dunaway Holbrook and the late Ray “Holbie” Holbrook. She retired from the Kentucky Department of Corrections Division of Probation and Parole and had lived in Estill County all her life. She was a member of the Rice Station Christian Church, the Eastern Star, and a former member of the 4-H Council. Survivors in addition to her mother include:

KY 2001 at Estill-Powell county line to be closed beginning Thursday, Sept. 25, for bridge replacement project
Closure expected to last through late November
JACKSON, Ky. – Beginning Thursday, Sept. 25, KY 2001 at the Estill-Powell county line will be closed for replacement of a bridge crossing Plum Branch.

The bridge is located 0.7 miles east of KY 82 at Spout Springs.

A signed detour will be posted using KY 82, the Mountain Parkway, and KY 1057.

The new bridge is scheduled to be completed by late November. Until then, drivers will need to use the detour route.

The existing bridge is rated in poor condition. It was built in 1936, and it has a posted weight limit of between 21 and 31 tons, depending on the vehicle type. Fewer than 200 vehicles use this bridge each day.

KY 399/KY 587 in Lee County to be closed Saturday, Sept. 20


JACKSON, Ky. – Drivers who use KY 399 and KY 587 at Idamay in Lee County should plan to use an alternate route on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The road will be closed from 8 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m. near milepoint 2.1 for replacement of two drainage pipes. This location is near Tim Reece's Body Shop on the concurrent segment of KY 399 and KY 587.

No signed detour will be posted. Alternate routes to bypass the closure include Delvinta Road, KY 399, KY 3536, KY 30, and KY 11 through Owsley County; or Todds Road/Cressmont Road and KY 399.

In case of inclement weather, the project may be postponed until another suitable date.

Approximately 370 vehicles use this section of KY 399 and KY 587 each day.

LAWRENCEBURG – Sarah Beth Rogers Young, 35, passed away on September 11, 2025, following a fatal collision in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Born on December 10, 1989, in Richmond, KY, she was the daughter of Brenda Joyce Cornett Rogers and the late Amos Glenn Rogers.

Sarah was a devoted housewife and a member of Goshen Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg, KY. Her life was filled with love, resilience, and joy. She cherished her children and family deeply, bringing laughter and light to everyone around her. Known as "daddy's girl," Sarah shared a special bond with her father, and it was meaningful to her that she was born on her great grandmother Sarah's birthday, proudly carrying on both her name and her legacy. She loved the outdoors, especially fishing, and treasured the close relationship she shared with her sister, Rachel.

In addition to her mother, Brenda Rogers, she is survived by her children, Emily Young of Louisville, KY, and Carson Rogers of Lawrenceburg, KY; her brothers, Christopher Jacob Rogers and Matthew Mart Rogers, both of Lawrenceburg, KY; and her sister, Rachel Starr Rogers of Lawrenceburg, KY.

Along with her father, Amos Glenn Rogers, she was preceded in death by her son, Jesse Daniel Rogers; her brother, Amon Glenn Rogers III; her paternal grandparents, Amos and Louise Rogers; and her maternal grandparents, Isaac and Wanda Cole Cornett.

Cremation was chosen, and no services are scheduled.

Phillip Henry 45 of Irvine passed away Monday September 8, 2025, in Cincinnati Ohio He was born in Irvine on August 6, 1980, to Troy and Peggy Henry. He was a construction worker by trade. He is survived by his parents Troy and Peggy Henry, two daughters Alissa Henry, Brooklyn Henry, two brothers Steven Henry, and Jeffery Henry, his companion Elizabeth Roberts. Funeral services were held at 2PM Saturday September 13, 2025, at the Grayson Funeral Home Chapel in Irvine with Bro. Phillip Smith officiating. Friends visited from 12PM till time of service.
