A series of absences has left the city of Orange Cove with a new mayor and an open seat on the city council.

At the May 26, 2026 Special City Council Meeting, the council took action to appoint Mayor Pro Tem/Councilmember Gilbert Garcia to the office of Mayor.

Mayor Garcia’s term will run through November 2026, leaving his council seat now vacant. The City Council voted to move forward with a special appointment process to fill the remaining council seat term. According to the City Attorney, a special election is not necessary due to the short amount of time remaining in the term and the costs associated with conducting an election.

The council directed city staff to release a public notice and begin seeking candidates from the community by their next regular meeting on June 10, 2026.
