We moved this organ from the First Congregational Church in Bridgeport to St. Theresa Catholic Church in Trumbull, CT. The organ was built by the Roche Organ Company in Taunton, MA in 1981. The instrument had four prepared for stops. We added a Trumpet 8’ and Dulcian 8’ in the Great, and a Bassoon 16’ and Principal 8’ in the Pedal. We also improved the Echo action and built a new Echo-to-Great coupler. With the help of the organist, the voicing was adapted to the much larger space that the organ is located in now.

Stefan Maier Tracker Organs offers high quality pipe organ service to clients all over New England, and beyond. We care for some of the more renowned organs in our home state of Massachusetts, such as the Old North Church, Mechanics Hall, Harvard University (see video), and Wellesley College.

Our services range from regular servicing and tuning to building, repairs, and full restorations. Our shop is fully equipped to do tonal, wood, leather, metal, and electrical work. We are also experienced in moving and rigging large instruments.

Stefan explains his approach to this work in this fine video from Harvard Art Museums, as he works on the Flentrop organ in Adolphus Busch Hall:

Ben MacCartney and Stefan Maier recently reinstalled the refurbished wind regulator (bellows) at the 1958 Flentrop organ at the Busch-Reisinger museum at Harvard University. The original wind regulator had a hole in a corner gusset.

If size matters Atlantic City is where you want to go. Today we got a chance crawl through the largest pipe organ in the world. In my roll as an organ tourist I couldn't resist to have my picture taken with some the monsters open 32' pipes. Double languids and wind pressures up to 100" are used in the attempt to adequately show-er the 500' x 300' indoor stadium with organ music.

The 2016 OHS convention in Philadelphia has been wild and eclectic mix of anything that bears the name pipe organ and is mostly impressing by size. It's all good and much fun. But personally for me one of the highlights was the Brombaugh organ that was featured today by Kimberly Marshall. I was absolutely flabbergasted (did I spell that correctly, John). I helped build this organ during the 3 years that I worked for Brombaugh & Assoc. in Eugene, OR from 1987 to 1990. I left the shop when the organ was ready to be installed. I had never seen or heard it in the church in Wilmington until today. In my humble opinion this instrument is a true success from the viewpoint of a functional poly style organ. Kimberly's program was mostly early music but ended with a passacaglia by Rheinberger (op 132). This showed some of the organ's historical range. Where earlier Brombaughs might have strived to imitate the north german baroque ideal to the t this instrument derives it's uniqueness and personality by successfully blending several historical ideals. Many have attempted this, no doubt. Not all are worth repeating. But this organ can be regarded a model for melding styles in terms of voicing, esthetics and combining action technologies. Some credit may need to go to Taylor & Boody who have done the maintenance in recent years and worked out some 'Kinderkrankheiten' and in doing so probably made the organ even better.

The 8 largest front pipes where lowered down, cleaned, inspected and reinforced if needed. Sprinloaded suspensions were added in the back of the pipe to take about 50% of it's weight. The pipes are made from mostly lead with a tinfoil veneer for appearance. The heaviest pipes weighs about 145lbs. A temporary I-beam was installed by Stefan Maier and his team on top of the organ from which a cable hoist was suspended. The remote controlled hoist was used to lift the pipes out of the organ and to lower them down to the main floor of the chapel from where they were carried into the mobil Taylor & Boody pipe shop stationed outside the chapel. Robbie Lawson and B.J. Boody from T&B checked the pipes for sagging languids and collapsing mouths and other potential damage and made the necessary repairs. Then the pipes got hoisted back up into the organ.
