On this date in 1960, Disney released “Jungle Cat,” the final film in the award-winning True-Life Adventure nature series. Learn how these films began in our “The Origins of Walt Disney’s True-Life Adventures,” a 166-page hardcover officially licensed by Disney, written by Didier Ghez, and created with cooperation from the Walt Disney Archives. Artist Harold “Hal” Helvenston is pictured in front of the Walt Disney Productions entrance sign at the Disney Studios on Hyperion Avenue in the 1930s. Helvenston helped recruit Harry Tytle and Larry Lansburgh, both of whom went on to distinguished Disney producing careers. Tytle and Lansburgh’s early polo team adventures with Mel Shaw will be documented in Didier Ghez’s article in our upcoming HHA Annual, with a few more details about Hal Helvenston as well!

Disney employees at the 2719 Hyperion Avenue studio location found cool comfort under the shade of this courtyard tree, a quiet break from crafting movie magic in the late 1930s. Our own HHA label pays homage to the Hyperion name and the creative roots that sprang from this historic spot!

Two of our “El Grupo” authors, Ted Thomas and Didier Ghez, are sharing Disney history this week with Disney Vacation Club members at sea! HHA Vice President Tim O’Day is also moderating and hosting special events as well. At 2 pm on August 3, 1965, a new chapter in Disney history was written when Admiral Joe Fowler (Chair), O.V. “Mel” Melton (President), and Roger Broggie (Vice President) convened the first meeting of the Board of Directors for MAPO, as seen in these documents preserved by an HHA member.

Incorporated nearly two weeks prior as Disney experienced success with “Mary Poppins” and the New York World’s Fair, MAPO would prove crucial in the coming years as Walt Disney Imagineering designed and manufactured increasingly sophisticated technology components needed for Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, and Project Florida’s transformation into Walt Disney World.

The MAPO Board’s next meeting in November would begin addressing the growing demand for its services. Their work continues to entertain and inspire Disney fans 60 years later! Look for more details about this era when Tom Morris writes his second book covering Walt Disney Imagineering’s early history; his first volume is currently in layout and review with publication expected in 2026 by the HHA Press!

Hey, Paul! Disney released the short “Paul Bunyan” on August 1, 1958! Directed by Les Clark, the film also featured a delightful title tune written by George Bruns. This film’s journey to the screen will be written about in a future HHA Press Monograph.

Seventy-five years ago this summer, “Treasure Island” sailed into cinemas, including New York City’s Mayfair Theatre with this impressive multi-story display at Seventh Avenue and 47th promoting Walt Disney’s first fully live-action feature film!

Happy 95th birthday to Disney Legend Mary Costa! Pictured here at the Hollywood Bowl in 2004 with fellow Disney Legend Dick Van D**e, Mary was recently interviewed about her marriage to director Frank Tashlin for an article to be published in the next HHA Annual.
