Retired performer Dany Saval celebrates her 84th birthday today! Seen here with Walt Disney at an awards show in the early 1960s, Saval made a memorable splash in Disney’s “Moon Pilot” (1962), as a friendly alien from the planet Beta Lyrae. She even sang a Sherman Brothers song in the film, so we celebrate those still with us who worked personally with Walt to create Disney history!

From 1963, here’s a rare photo of future Disney Legend Sam McKim painting concept artwork for the Magic Skyway attraction planned for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Before retiring from Walt Disney Imagineering in 1987, McKim created the artwork for the Disneyland souvenir maps cherished by guests for decades.

Happy Birthday, if it’s your day, but even if it’s an Unbirthday, let’s celebrate this original illustration art for a record cover from the 1970s! Mickey Mouse seems to be holding up more of his end of the cake as Donald Duck sings. Pictured are the production elements that went into creating the final cover for this Disneyland Record celebrating all things birthday related. Perhaps you once received a copy on your birthday?

This original illustration by an uncredited artist was used as the lead illustration for this Disney storybook’s retelling of “The Flying Gauchito.” The delightful animated segment in “The Three Caballeros” was inspired by real-life adventures experienced by Walt Disney and a team of his artists. Casey Jr. is coming down the track to join us in wishing you a Happy New Year! As we look ahead, we say thank you to the many new friends who have joined us in recent months. Your follows, likes, thoughtful comments, and support of our publications affirm something we believe: there are still rare, overlooked, and meaningful chapters of Disney history waiting to be discovered.

We’re grateful to share behind-the-scenes stories, seldom-seen photos, and forgotten moments with a community that values Disney’s historic cultural impact. As we move into 2026, we’re excited to share even more—new research, deeper dives, and stories that deserve to be remembered.

Let us know what you’ve enjoyed most so far—and what you’d love to see more of in the year ahead. Together, we’ll keep curating Disney history, like this vintage New Year’s photo promoting “Dumbo” at the start of 1942, and finding that there’s always more magic to uncover. ✨

Should auld acquaintance be forgot? Walt Disney’s Mouseketeers famously sang that “through the years we’ll all be friends, wherever we may be,” so we bring to mind their holiday-themed record released in 1958 celebrating the New Year! Let’s resolve to forever hold our Mickey Mouse Club banner high and remember Disney history! Happy New Year!

We’re looking forward to sharing more rare Disney history in 2026, so thanks for following the Hyperion Historical Alliance Press!

From the holiday season in 1963, these photos document an elaborate theater display promoting “The Sword in the Stone” in an unidentified but presumably colder climate. “Disneyland After Dark” also made the bill with a theatrical release. It’s a rare glimpse into how classic Disney films were promoted to the public as top box office draws.

From Walt Disney’s “The Sword in the Stone” (1963), here are some test cels created early in the production of the opening storybook sequence. The cels show King Uther holding the sword as well as some of the familiar words used in lyrics for the title song by Disney Legends Richard and Robert Sherman. Interesting examples of what might have been!

Happy holidays! Artist Russell Schroeder created this festive homage to “Pinocchio” during the film’s 1978 theatrical reissue with “The Small One.” It’s the kind of Disney history we celebrate, from all of us to all of you!
