Ahead of the fall 1954 debut of his “Disneyland” TV series, Walt Disney posed for publicity photos like this one of him “filming” Peter Pan, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse. Staged photos aside, Walt was actually quite good with a camera. Our most recent HHA Annual has an article by Tom Klein about Walt’s first movie camera and his early work as a newsreel photographer; our annuals are available on Amazon.

Composer John Williams made headlines recently when the 94-year-old maestro made a surprise appearance at a Hollywood Bowl concert featuring his music. Here’s a photo of him collaborating with fellow Academy Award winners Robert and Richard Sherman on “Tom Sawyer” (1973). Although it wasn’t a Disney film, the movie has many Disney-style sensibilities thanks to the talents of these three brilliant men. All three received Oscar nominations for the film; they are also Disney Legends Award recipients.

Labor Day is a great opportunity to honor the many people whose Disney work has entertained and inspired a global audience. Here’s a photo of actor Richard Todd arriving at The Walt Disney Studios to discuss his role in “Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue,” released in America in 1954. Named a Disney Legend in 2002, Todd starred in three live-action swashbuckler films for Walt.

If you’re in the Michigan area, be sure to visit “HerStory of Animation — Mary Blair & Beyond.” Curated by author and HHA Vice President Mindy Johnson, the exhibit celebrates pioneering women animators and artists. It runs through September 27 at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Mindy also writes about this subject in her forthcoming book, “The ‘Only’ Woman Animator—Bessie Mae Kelley and Women at the Dawn of an Industry.”

Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee! It truly was an actor’s life for Disney Legend Fulton Burley, seen here at Disneyland with characters from Walt Disney’s “Pinocchio” (1940). In addition to his Golden Horseshoe Revue and Enchanted Tiki Room work, Burley frequently traveled for Disney in the 1970s and 1980s to promote releases of Disney films.

For Disney’s “The Aristocats” (1970), many of the adult voice actors were established stars who overshadowed their younger costars. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the three talented child voice actors at work: Gary Dubin as Toulouse, Dean Clark as Berlioz, and Liz English as Marie. To quote the Sherman Brothers, this trio was showing “aristoc’atic flair in what they do and what they say!”

In this publicity photo, Walt Disney held the 1950s Big Golden Book edition of Dumbo, illustrated by Disney artist Dick Kelsey. Kelsey’s vibrant, expressive artwork brought Dumbo alive, making this edition a staple in family bookshelves and school libraries for generations. The Walt Disney Studios often used special letterhead for correspondence to promote its upcoming film releases. This one for “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (1954) is particularly clever, with a diver descending into the depths down one side. One of our HHA authors, Kevin Kidney (Kevin and Jody Show), will be talking about this film at a screening on Sept. 27 at The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, CA!
