From the Archives: Five Star Painting 🎨, No. 10 Fastest-Growing Company in 2009 (now Five Star Franchising)

One of Utah Valley’s most consistent fastest-growing companies (more than 7 years on the list), the company started as a home-painting company by Scott Abbott. As the company expanded into multiple franchising avenues and rebranded as Five Star Franchising, a platform of home service brands with 800+ franchises across North America, the company has kept on keepin’ on. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“The big question is why franchising? When you’re trying to expand from one city to the next, you have to think it through. If someone doesn’t have ownership, what motivation does he have to work? We tried expanding into three cities before we started franchising, and it was a complete disaster. It became apparent very quickly that the only way to expand was to attract people who want to own a business — people who are invested, dedicated and committed. That’s our goal. It’s all about making the franchisees happy and successful. They’ve become like family, and it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.”

40 Under 40 Spotlight: Lindsay Berndt, Altabank 🏦

When Lindsay Berndt started as a part-time teller in 2008, she didn’t plan for it to lead to a full-time career. But what a happy surprise it has been! Across her career of almost 20 years, she has created and managed a branch training department, participated in the acquisitions of three Banks of American Fork and has managed the largest branch at Altabank. And don’t forget the girl power! 💁‍♀️ Lindsay also graduated from the very first Professional Women of Altabank cohort. Above all, her greatest joy comes from seeing people excel. That’s a professional account balance we can get behind. 💸

CAUTIONARY TALES
“Some non-helpful business advice has been, ‘You can’t be friends with your employees.’ While it’s important to maintain a professional and respectful relationship, for me, fostering a friendly atmosphere has led to good morale, collaboration, improved communication and increased job satisfaction.”

40 Under 40 Spotlight: Kaylie Winter, Heritage Craft Butchers 🐄

Kaylie was raised with an appreciation for quality food, and even shadowed her grandfather “Grandpa G” in the butcher room. 🍴 A few years ago, her father invited her to be a part of a greater mission: bringing responsibly raised and processed beef to Utah. She opened the flagship Orem location of Heritage Craft Butchers in August 2023 (which includes a working kitchen and curated menu), and this summer is opening the Spanish Fork location. Heritage Craft Butchers proudly serves over 1,000 restaurants throughout Utah. “Butchery is a timeless, essential skill — and we’re here to preserve, elevate and pass it on to the next generation.” 🩶

🍔 MAIN MOTIVATION 🍔
“I’m motivated by a desire to bring people closer to their food — understanding where it comes from, how it’s prepared and why that matters. Building trust with our customers and supporting local sourcing practices is what fuels our work every day.”

40 Under 40 Spotlight: Kalli White, Pinners Conference (Bennett Events) 📌

If Pinterest came to life, it would be Pinners Conference. And Kalli White, chief marketing officer, is to thank for creating the buzz, building the community, and making sure the Pinners story gets told in the right way. Pinners started when Kalli’s dad sparked the initial idea, and Kalli helped out with social media. “We’ve all grown it together from there,” she says. Now, Pinners Conference sets up shop in Utah, Texas, Arizona, Georgia and Kansas, where creativity takes center stage. 🎨 🖌️

🌟 PROUD MOMENTS 🌟
“I’ve helped Pinners grow from a regional event into a nationally recognized experience — increasing attendance and helping small business owners’ dreams come true all over the country! I regularly coordinate successful media campaigns and interviews in some of the biggest media markets in America, usually with a toddler on my lap. I’m living the dream!”

Sometimes, team bonding happens best over salmon. 🐟

We asked our editorial board some of their most memorable team building retreats, and Andrew K. Smith with Savory Fund said…

“I took two different groups of my executives to Port Hardy, Vancouver Island Canada to salmon fish. I don’t know who enjoyed it more, the men or the women, but it was an incredible trip due to the amazing sight-seeing, beautiful wildlife, and incredible fish we all caught. It was so remote that we spent so much time reconnecting. It was great to form new bonds between team members.” 🤝 🧡

40 Under 40 Spotlight: Kaili Smith, JobNimbus

When she started with JobNimbus as a content writer, Kaili’s impressive wit, behavioral science intuition, and creative perspective drove revenue and skyrocketed her career. 🚀 Now, as the leader of marketing strategy at JobNimbus, Kaili has helped scale multiple companies from $2 million to $20 million, and one from $30 million to $80 million. Her team has won “Best Marketing Team” two years in a row across their investor portfolio, and Kaili even helped drive one of the largest Series B funding rounds in Utah’s tech space (a whopping $330 million led by Sumeru Equity Partners) while raising two kids as a single mom.

In her own words, “Proud doesn’t begin to cover it.” 🩵

🛠️ COMBATING DOUBT 🛠️
“If I’m facing discouragement, I create momentum. If I’m in a spiral, I try to generate a quick win — 3D print something, build something, move my body, read something new. Anything to snap me out of pity mode and back into curiosity.”

40 Under 40 Spotlight: Kenzie Bates, Kenzie’s Events 🥳

Life should be a party, and Kenzie Bates brings the disco lights. 🪩 From small-scale, intimate parties to events with 10,000+ attendees, Kenzie crushes any party on the spectrum. Her party prowess has been featured in People Magazine, the Washington Post, USA Today, the Today Show and more. If you had a chance to see the 2023 Halloween Barbie Street in Daybreak, it’s time to give Kenzie a standing ovation. “Imagination, life is your creation” may be Barbie’s motto, but Kenzie is the one bringing the Dream House (and its parties) to life. 🪄

🚨 CODE RED 🚨
“With Covid, practically overnight every event on my calendar was canceled or postponed. Instead of waiting it out, I taught myself how to create balloon garlands, something I hadn’t done before but knew people were starting to look for with smaller, home-based celebrations. I began offering contactless installations and custom décor that allowed clients to still celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and milestones safely. That quick shift not only helped me keep income flowing, but also expanded my services and introduced me to an entirely new client base.”

40 Under 40 Spotlight: Kelsey Outram, LIFT Auto Repair Marketing 🚗

After he and his wife, Jen Outram, started a general marketing agency in 2020, the next year they realized that niche was the way to go — and they made the smart pivot to the auto repair industry. This honed-in focus has led to LIFT Auto Repair Marketing being listed as last year’s UV50 No. 4 Fastest-Growing Company. Beyond business metrics, Kelsey is grateful to have built a fully remote company that allows flexibility for him and his employees to focus on family time. Kelsey upLIFTs at work and at home. 🏋‍♂️

SHARPER SKILLS
“A skill I had to gain was sales, so I could help people see what we could do as a marketing company. My background was previously in finance, so creating a sales process was very new for me. I’m still learning every day.”
