Starting today, October 9th, the U.S. Navy will "launch" their 250th birthday celebrations with a week's worth of events that includes a parade of ships, a ceremonial welcoming and Blessing of the Fleet, public ship tours, and exhibits featuring new naval innovations.

On October 1st, 1890, Yosemite National Park was officially established. Yosemite became the third national park to be established in the United States, preserving 1,500 square miles of land. A way for Americans and foreign visitors to enjoy this land's natural splendor.

On September 26th, 1960, Vice-President Richard Nixon and Senator John F. Kennedy took the stage in Chicago for a Presidential Debate that would forever change the manner in which political discourse would be judged. Those who listened on radio believed Nixon won the debate, while those watching on television believed Kennedy won the debate.

This Week in History: Nuremberg Laws are announced during the annual Nuremberg Rally. Following the ascent of Adolf Hi**er, the N**i Party, and the successful Nuremberg rallies, the Nuremberg Laws laid the groundwork for the systematic persecution of Jews.

U.S. Senator from Louisiana, Huey Long, was assassinated, and died a little more than a day later. Over 200,000 people would travel to Baton Rouge to attend his funeral. One of the most charismatic politicians in modern history, The Kingfish was once asked to describe his own philosophy. He replied, "Oh, hell, say that I'm sui generis and let it go at that."

Japan's formal surrender was signed aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. From the announcement in August to the formal surrender, Americans celebrated the complete end of World War II, and the return of their soldiers fighting on land and sea.

New Orleans suffered, and the nation watched, as Hurricane Katrina destroyed and flooded an iconic city. Although the city has largely recovered since, the turmoil and costs following the storm will always be remembered, and must be avoided in any future natural disaster.

On August 18th, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote, was ratified by the Tennessee legislature, marking the final step in the process, adding the amendment to the Constitution.

No matter when you visit, though, our nation's National Park Service is ready to welcome visitors from all corners of our nation and from all around the world. Many of these National Parks are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year and MPI Stock Footage Archive wants to share highlights of some of these majestic landscapes, including Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, Saguaro National Park, and Death Valley National Park. And we thank all the men and women working for the National Park Service, maintaining our country's natural treasures and beauty. Time to go back to school. Although there's no national date or week children go back to school, it is that time of year. Summer wanes and children return to their studies. Parents rejoice!

President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Medicare bill, which also included Medicaid, into law at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, with former President Harry S Truman in attendance. Obviously important in current events today, the bills continue to provide medical insurance aid, and are relied upon, by the elderly and poor.
