Sparked by spikes in the price of food and other consumer goods, but plagued with wage stagnation, Polish citizens protested and rioted. Dozens of people were killed and a thousand were injured before the military and local militia suppressed the riots. In the aftermath, local leaders were forced to resign, wages were increased, and consumer prices hikes were reversed.

On December 10th, 1950, Dr. Ralph Bunche became the first African American man to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as a United Nations mediator between Israel and its Arab neighbors (Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria). His efforts led to the 1949 Armistice Agreement.

On December 5th, the Montgomery Bus Boycott begins following the arrest of Rosa Parks the on December 1st. Her refusal to give up her seat for a white person sparked a non-violent protest campaign that continued until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled bus segregation in Alabama and Montgomery to be unconstitutional.

On November 20th, the Nuremberg Trials begin in Nuremberg, Germany. Allied forces put various N**i Party leaders and collaborators on trial in front an international military tribunal. In some ways, this trial became the origin of international criminal law. This historical anniversary also coincides with the movie "Nuremberg" out in theaters earlier this month.

On October 28th, 1965, the St. Louis Arch was completed. It is the world's tallest arch. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, the Arch, is commonly referred to as "The Gateway to the West".

On October 24th, 1945, the United Nations was formally established in San Francisco, replacing the League of Nations. After two devasting World Wars, the body was establish to prevent any large-scale breakout of war and provide some semblance of a rules-based international order.

On October 15th, 1950, the world’s first radio paging service began operating at the Jewish Hospital in New York City. It had a range of 30 miles. The first page was sent to a doctor who was playing golf 25 miles away.

Starting today, October 9th, the U.S. Navy will "launch" their 250th birthday celebrations with a week's worth of events that includes a parade of ships, a ceremonial welcoming and Blessing of the Fleet, public ship tours, and exhibits featuring new naval innovations.
