A new chapter is ahead for Spaceship Earth. 🌐✨

Announced at D23, Walt Disney Imagineering is preparing to reimagine EPCOT’s iconic Spaceship Earth for the first time in nearly two decades.

For generations, the attraction has invited guests to journey through the story of human communication, from the earliest shared ideas to the innovations that continue to shape our world. In its next evolution, that story will move into the internet age and beyond, expanding its focus from communication to the broader theme of human connection.

The reimagined experience will continue to celebrate the optimism, curiosity and spirit of discovery that have made Spaceship Earth such an enduring part of EPCOT, while exploring how people and ideas come together to shape the future.

More details about the transformation are still to come, but the story of Spaceship Earth is continuing forward.

Horizons. 🌐✨ From construction and opening day to closure, an unexpected return and eventual demolition, these archive images tell the story of one of EPCOT Center’s most beloved attractions.

Opening on October 1, 1983, Horizons offered an optimistic vision of how families might live in the future, taking guests beneath the sea, across the desert and even into space.

With Audio-Animatronics, enormous Omnimax screens, detailed environments, music and memorable scents, Horizons became one of the defining experiences of the original Future World.

But its history includes a chapter that is sometimes forgotten. General Electric’s sponsorship ended on September 30, 1993, and Horizons continued operating without a sponsor for more than a year before closing in late 1994.

For a time, it appeared Horizons might never reopen. Then, in December 1995, the pavilion unexpectedly returned as major changes were taking place nearby. World of Motion was preparing to make way for Test Track, while Universe of Energy was also headed for a major refurbishment. Reopening Horizons helped keep another major experience operating on that side of Future World.

That second life lasted several more years before Horizons finally closed for good on January 9, 1999. Demolition followed in 2000, clearing the site for what would eventually become Mission: SPACE.

For many, Horizons represented something bigger than a single attraction. It captured the hopeful, imaginative spirit of early EPCOT and its belief that tomorrow could truly be something worth looking forward to.

A first look inside Olaf Draws! ✏️⛄
Disney Imagineer Danny Handke takes us inside one of the newest experiences coming to The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

In Olaf Draws!, guests will step into a reimagined animator’s studio where an all-new Audio-Animatronics Olaf takes his place behind the drawing desk, inspired by his memorable moment in Once Upon a Studio.

With Olaf’s encouragement and guidance from some of the talented artists behind Walt Disney Animation Studios films, guests will be able to pick up a pencil and learn how to bring beloved Disney characters to life one line at a time.

It’s a new chapter for animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, while bringing the art of drawing back to a place where it has such a special history. ✨

Olaf Draws! opens September 14 as part of The Magic of Disney Animation.

🎬 ONE TOWER. TWO NAMES. ONE HOLLYWOOD ICON. ✨

When Disney-MGM Studios opened on May 1, 1989, the 130-foot-tall Earffel Tower quickly became one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks. Topped with its unmistakable Mickey Mouse ears, the tower proudly carried the Disney-MGM Studios name for nearly two decades.

Then, on January 7, 2008, the park officially became Disney’s Hollywood Studios, reflecting its evolution beyond the original working-studio concept. The Earffel Tower changed with it, receiving the new Disney’s Hollywood Studios logo for the remainder of its time in the park.

The beloved landmark remained part of the skyline until 2016, when it was removed as the former backlot area began its transformation.

Two names. Two eras. One unforgettable piece of Hollywood history. 🎥✨

🌙 One of the most unforgettable moments inside Journey Into Imagination with Figment arrives near the very end of the attraction… and for some Guests, it may also be one of the most unexpected.

Dr. Nigel Channing, portrayed by actor and Monty Python legend Eric Idle, appears high above the finale as a giant face in the moon. It is a wonderfully unusual piece of EPCOT storytelling, blending humor, imagination and just enough surrealism to make the scene feel a little daunting when you first encounter it.

For years, the image of Channing looking down from the moon has remained one of those distinctly memorable moments that Guests either find charming, hilarious… or perhaps just a little unsettling. 🌙✨

And soon, this version of the journey will begin making way for a new chapter. Changes are coming to the Imagination pavilion, with Dreamfinder set to return alongside Figment as part of the attraction’s future.

Until then, the moon continues to shine over one of EPCOT’s most wonderfully peculiar finales. 💜

What if the Yeti is waiting for you sooner than you think? 🏔️🐾

Following the announcement at D23 that the legendary Yeti of Expedition Everest will roar to life once again, it’s exciting to imagine how a few new moments could add even more suspense to the journey.

What if, as your expedition reaches the broken tracks high above the Forbidden Mountain, the Yeti suddenly appears ahead? One unexpected encounter could make it feel as though it's the reason your train is sent racing backwards into the darkness.

Then, after disappearing deeper into the mountain, the expedition continues… until you come face-to-face with the guardian once again during that unforgettable final encounter. ❄️👀

Just one idea that could build on the story already in place and make the Yeti feel even more present throughout the adventure at Disney's Animal Kingdom

✨ THE MAGIC KINGDOM… OR MAGIC KINGDOM? ✨

It’s a subtle change, but one that reflects the evolution of Walt Disney World over more than five decades.

When the park opened in 1971, it was widely presented as “The Magic Kingdom.” That wording later became part of one of the most recognizable views at the resort, displayed proudly across the Walt Disney World Railroad station above the entrance to Main Street, U.S.A.

As Walt Disney World expanded into a much larger destination with multiple parks, resorts and experiences, the park’s identity evolved with it. Over time, Magic Kingdom became the more streamlined name used to distinguish the park itself from the resort as a whole.

That evolution became especially visible in 2017, when the longtime “THE MAGIC KINGDOM” station sign was replaced with the version guests see today: “MAGIC KINGDOM” with “EST. 1971.”

The change wasn’t simply about removing one word. It reflected a more modern, consistent identity for the park while still preserving the heritage of the original 1971 entrance.

✨ The Brother Who Carried the Dream Forward 🏰

When Walt Disney passed away in 1966, the future of his ambitious Florida Project suddenly fell into the hands of his brother, Roy O. Disney.

Roy had been preparing for retirement, but instead remained with the company to make sure Walt’s final great dream was completed. He helped guide the financing, construction and opening of the resort, and even insisted that it be named Walt Disney World so future generations would always remember whose dream it was.

On October 1, 1971, Magic Kingdom officially opened its gates, and Walt’s vision finally became a reality.

Today, Roy’s legacy lives on in Town Square, where guests can find the “Sharing the Magic” statue of Roy seated beside Minnie Mouse. ❤️

During the fall and winter seasons, the statue is sometimes temporarily relocated a few feet closer to City Hall or the Fire Station to make room for Halloween displays and Magic Kingdom’s massive Christmas tree. Once the seasonal decorations are removed, Roy and Minnie return to their familiar spot near the flagpole.

Roy may not have dreamed up Walt Disney World, but he made sure his brother’s dream was never left unfinished. ✨

🟢 GO AWAY GREEN DOESN’T EXIST… and you’ve seen it EVERYWHERE. 👀✨

At least, not as one single magical shade of green.

For decades, Walt Disney Imagineering has used what are often called “go away” colors to make the things you need to see… disappear into the background.

The philosophy can be traced back to legendary Disney Imagineer John Hench, a master of color and environmental design. When a modern safety railing had to be added inside EPCOT’s American Adventure, Hench described choosing a neutral gray-brown “go away” color that wouldn’t draw attention or interfere with the Colonial setting.

That same design philosophy can be found throughout Disney Parks today.

Muted greens, grays and other carefully selected tones help camouflage everything from utility equipment and fences to speakers, service areas, show buildings and backstage infrastructure. Rather than one official “Go Away Green,” the exact color can change depending on the landscaping, lighting and environment around it.

The goal is simple: your eyes are supposed to look right past it.

And the funny part?

Once you know what you’re looking for… you’ll start seeing it EVERYWHERE. 👀🟢

Just another example of how some of Imagineering’s most effective details are the ones you were never supposed to notice.
