USA🇺🇸 is constructing a new standalone ballroom to replace the existing East Wing of the White House, with an estimated cost ranging from $200 million to $250 million. The planned 90,000-square-foot structure will accommodate around 650 guests for major state events and is expected to be completed before the end of the current administration.

The project is being led by McCrery Architects, a firm renowned for its expertise in classical architecture.

The White House site was originally selected by President George Washington in 1791, with the cornerstone laid the following year. The chosen design, by Irish-born architect James Hoban, has endured as a symbol of American democracy for over two centuries.

However, the project has drawn strong criticism from architectural institutions. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) expressed “deep concern” over the demolition of the East Wing, stating that the move contradicts previous public assurances that the new ballroom would “be near it, but not touching it, and pay total respect to the existing building.”

According to the AIA, the undertaking raises serious questions about “the integrity of the architecture involved, as well as the transparency, process, and public stewardship that underlie our civic built environment.”
